Sheikh up at the Battle?

Wednesday 23rd March 2011, 2:58PM GMT.

His Excellency Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan with Treasury Minister Philip Ozouf in Abu Dhabi

ONE float in this year’s Battle of Flowers parade might be more gold leaf than paper flowers as a rich Arab country wants to take part.

After forging business and finance links with the Island, Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, is keen to get involved in Jersey’s annual summer carnival.

The idea comes after Treasury Minister Philip Ozouf met Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, the chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, in the emirate at the weekend when he suggested that it be represented in some way at the Battle.

Ha, so the plan is that they buid a float in Abu Dhabi, bring it over here, covered in gold flowers and we say that it doesn’t have the correct paperwork, and confiscate it. We then offer it as a gift (dowry) to the Indians in exchage for signing the tax agreement?

    Cunning these politicians…..

I don’t have a problem with foreign representation at the Battle, but should we be happy to see our future head of government cosying it up with a Middle Eastern dictator?

    Why not?
It might promote a little understanding of other cultures to some of our more “isolationist” population.
