Candidate out of running for States property position

Monday 28th March 2011, 1:58PM BST.

Baroness Ford has withdrawn from the candidacy for the position with the States of Jersey Development Company

BARONESS Ford has pulled out of the running for the £1,666-a-day job of chairing the new States of Jersey Development Company over public criticism of her nomination.

States Members have been told that Baroness Ford told ministers that she wanted to withdraw her candidacy after the proposition confirming her appointment as head of the States’ new property development company was held up in the States Chamber.

Ministers are now scrambling to find a replacement to take on the job, which is worth £40,000 a year for 24 days’ work.

Zoro..You have to wonder….? I am not alone in having serious worries about the appointments board..I mean anyone with a laptop could have researched Steven Izatt at the Edinburgh waterfront board and what he cost them…so how the hell could the appointments board have even taken his application seriously…so you have to ask yourself…could it possibly be such a gross dereliction of duty on the boards part or did they know and appoint him anyway…if so why so.you can not blame the Taxpayer for being deeply skeptical and viewing these appointments with a jaundiced eye…come on politicians come on here and answer these questions.

    disillusioned

It was a real coup to get someone like Baroness Ford to Chair the SoJDC and the Island will be much poorer for her withdrawal. £40k per year is a small price to pay for the Island’s infrastructure developments to be properly managed by someone with experience and a proven track record. We have seen the cost many times of getting it wrong. Jersey is rapidly becoming a place where no-one of any quality will be prepared to stand for a public position because of the level of ill-informed comment, bitterness and political infighting.

    complete joke

£1,666 exceeds anything anyone else would get paid, even when times were good. Therefore in this really tough market, this is a complete nonsense. Clearly the people recruiting have not done their homework. Surprise surprise.

I heard about someone else who had worked for the States recently – they were paid approx £800 per day (which is still a very high rate) PLUS expenses. This guy stayed at the L’Horizon for the 6 months of his contract. A complete joke and a real waste of public money.

Can we all join you disillusioned? As the comments section of the JEP has shown time and time again regarding WEB.How can a man be paid £280,000 for making a mess of the waterfront, how can a perfectly good Fort Regent pool be closed down so that WEB pay a company £10 million to build a new pool and then give them over £260,000 a year to run it as a public grant.

Why was WEB there at all? Yes completely disillusioned just like you and obviously you agree with most of my comment as you said,

small price to pay for the Island’s infrastructure developments to be properly managed.

Meaning obviously they are not so sack the lot.

This is a good decision, she has no qualifications in this area and her value to the London Olympic “legacy” is questionable.

Why would she suddenly back off at the first hint of resistance,,,would she have had the staying power…or did someone just wake up and smell the coffee….

How can anyone justify £1’666 a day! Are you serious! No wonder Jersey has no money to fix roads or give kids free school milk! What a waste of public money!! Is there anyone working for the states who actually has a CLUE!!!! Get a grip, honestly!!!

Please wake up, it is people of her style that have and are continuing to ruin Jersey. We consistently pay top dollar for imports with no real stake in the Island (other than as a provider of a healthy meal ticket) who turn out to be rather mediocre. As far as qualifications are concerned her main (only?) one seems to be non executive. (I.e. does very little and if things go wrong [as they are starting to with the Olympic Legacy program] flits off in another direction). Her speciality seems to be NGO type organisations s and we all know effective they are and most of the time their performance is never monitored nor measured! On Google her Parliamentary performance is rated as “average”, perhaps she is too busy dashing around at £1,600 odd a day! There are already too many examples of “executives” here who “talk the talk” but cannot “walk the walk”, they are extremely efficient at getting to high positions at ridiculous salaries but totally ineffective at getting the job done. Just look at the mess the Island is in with it’s expensive top heavy administration and then remember the many times you have heard “we must get the best person for the job whatever it costs” and look at how many have come and gone “retired early “ or “seeking a new challenge” with large golden handshakes. How many more are still “in post” just taking the money. At £40,000.00 for 24 days it is obscene and an insult to many well qualified people here who do have a stake in the Island’s future and probably don’t get paid much more for a whole year.

With wages like this, no wonder there is no money left to repair Jersey’s roads…Something really needs to be done about the compensation of many more States members as well.

“£40,000.00 for 24 days it is obscene”

As a matter of fact, 24 days is a big commitment for a NED and £40k is very low for that sort of commitment. £15-25k a year for 4-6 days is par for the course.

Now, you may disagree with that. But its the going rate.
