Divers check the starboard hull of the Condor Vitesse

A man has died following a collision between the Condor Vitesse and a French fishing boat this morning.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, was plucked unconscious from the sea following a 30-minute search and died later in hospital.

Another two fishermen were rescued unharmed from the wreckage of vessel.

A major rescue operation was launched after the accident which happened shortly before 8 am as the Condor ferry was en route from St Malo. It is understood that the ferry collided with the boat east of the Minquiers reef in thick fog

    The poor man.

Let’s hope the ferry slows down a bit in fog in future.

    Tragic.
Be interesting to see what the outcome of the investigation was – did the fishermen have a radar reflector and white anti-collision flares on board? What speed was Condor travelling at?

CONDOR VITESSE Accordig to the marine tracking device the vessel was traveling at 36/37 knots. Who was looking at the radar in such poor visability? I am sorry someone has lost their life.

OK so it was foggy…why wasn’t the radar being watched more closely? As a sailor myself, it is scary when suddenly, out of nowhere, a ferry sometimes appears on the horizon and, in no time, is bearing down on you. Even when a boat is under sail the fast cats don’t always seem to observe the rules of the road…ie. they should move. Understandable if depth or space prevents them, but no excuse at sea. And that brings me back to the question of the person who should be watching out on the radar…what happened and why didn’t the Vitesse alter its course?
