Jersey’s maintenance bill: £1bn a year

Tuesday 19th April 2011, 2:59PM BST.

THE cost of running the Island will be almost £1 billion this year – just over £11,000 for every man, woman and child in Jersey.

That figure is the combined spending of States departments, plus the cost of major capital projects, pensions and health benefits.

It is impossible to be precise about the figures, because up-to-date details of the money coming out of the Social Security and Health Insurance contributory funds are not available.

But combining the 2011 gross departmental spending (£768m) and capital spending (£38m), and the latest figure for contributory benefits (£195m, from 2009), the grand total comes close to £1 billion.

I wanna be a billionaire so fricking bad. Is that Terry singing this song? Seriously with so many finance workers having private health care, surely it is time to look at those taking provisions for granted. I know of numerous women, who have had kids with whoever will get them pregnaunt just to avoid work and get the benefits

As said in 1. cut back in welfare provision for those producing multiple children.

Work permits to stop low paid immigrants coming in and getting on the welfare gravy train, then stop paying teenagers who refuse to find a job.

Also get rid of those civil servants getting £300k plus per year.

    Just for starters.

    1 & 2 haven’t got a clue!
What is the cost in the UK or elsewhere.
Saying it costs a billion is just headline grabbing…

#4 : Google to the rescue! Institute for Fiscal Studies – A Survey of Public Spending in the UK (2009) states..

“In the fiscal year 2008–09 the UK government spent £618.6 billion, or 43.2 per cent of the UK’s national income. This translates into just over £10,100 for every person in the UK, or about £13,000 per adult.”

..So it would seem Jersey’s spending on the populace is equivalent to that in the UK a couple of years ago..

..And a bit further perspective courtesy of the States Statistics Unit – Jersey Gross Value Added (GVA) and Gross National Income (GNI) 2009 states..

“GNI was estimated at £3.7 billion”

So £1 billion out of £3.7 billion would equate to 27% of Jersey’s national income..

If Jersey were to spend an equivalent percentage of national income to the UK on it’s populace, we’d be looking at £17,000 per person!

Those that stating above are probably correct in saying that the UK spends about what Jersey spends per head of population but on what ?

I seem to remember that the UK has a large army and Navy, financial commitments to the big EU club and new aircraft carriers to build.

How much per head in wages for the public sector in the UK ? far to much it seems with 500,000 public sector staff on redundency notice.

And little Jersey spends approx. £390 million on the public sector wages alone.

No wonder Jersey cannot afford to repair the road infrustructure and purchase other important equipment. How many of your pals in Jerseys public sector going Mr Ozouf ?

“If Jersey were to spend an equivalent percentage of national income to the UK on it’s populace, we’d be looking at £17,000 per person!”

The UK has a defence budget that includes a blue water navy, a fairly large air force and army for it’s size and a nuclear deterrent, plus universities, teaching hospitals, etc so it is not surprising that its expenditure is a lot higher.
Jersey spends a lot on not very much in relative terms.

    6. The UK has a much higher percentage of non workers than in Jersey. Their welfare payments are massive. The Lib/Conservative govenment are trying to cut costs – something our government should follow.

    shocked!

Overpopulated…i Couldn’t agree more! We need to start paying attention to what is goingon…surely a visa system that works would help prevent people coming in and staying and soaking up benefits that they have not worked for! Look at Oz and NZ they dont stand for it and there economy is booming (well take away the recent disaster etc!) people actually pay them to go and live there…dont see much of that from people coming to Jersey unless they are mega wealthy!!
