ISLAND Games newcomer Laurence Carter boosted his sailing profile last week by finishing fourth in the Spitfire multi-hull class at the Youth National Championship at Hayling Island.

Carter and crew Josh Potts, from Southampton, were among 355 of the county’s leading youth sailors competing at the Royal Yachting Association event, the most important on the national calendar as it forms part of the selection process for the ISAF (the international sailing body) Youth World Championship.

The internationally recognised youth classes are all represented at the regatta, the Laser Radial, 420, 29er, RSX windsurfer and the Spitfire multi-hull. The Spitfire was the smallest of the fleets but was of a high standard and produced some closely fought racing.

Carter and Potts will join other Jersey boats at the European Hobie Cat regatta in Carnac, another selection event, after Easter.
