Lifeboat callout cuts short vessel’s naming ceremony
Monday 23rd May 2011, 3:00PM BST.
THE naming ceremony of the new St Catherine’s Lifeboat was cut short yesterday when the crew was called to the rescue of a small motorboat in trouble off the Ecréhous.
More than 200 invited guests were half way through the second hymn shortly before midday when the call came in.
A 19-foot motorboat with two people on board suffering from hypothermia was in distress in strong winds and high waves.
Realising that the crew, who were already kitted up aboard the new Atlantic 85 rigid inflatable, had to launch, the Dean, the Very Rev Bob Key, quickly changed the order of the service and blessed the boat.

Thank goodness the cuts every where have not effected These Brave Men/Women who risk their lives to save ours, about time they received LARGE Donations from the Lottery or similar.
Being a family member of a fisherman this service is very dear to my heart.

The owner of the small motor boat, should be charged for wasting thier time. The forcast winds for that day where westerlies at 25 knots the actual winds were around 20 knots. The idiots should not of been out there in the first place.

Well done to the crew of St. Catherine’s new lifeboat.A baptism of fire! By the way, it’s Ecrehou or Les Ecrehou (with no plural “s” added), as used officially by the French(they must know), as well as the BBC on tide and weather reports and on all international marine charts. It’s a pity that the ancient Norse singular name, a derivation of Skerholme, is now incorrectly reported in every JEP article with added pseudo accents and in the plural. It’s now also on the new Jersey £50 banknote as Ecrehous.Let’s preserve what we have and that should include the preservation of ancient spelling of some of our place names, otherwise their origins will be lost to future generations.
