Iconic Odeon should remain public facility

Tuesday 24th May 2011, 3:00PM BST.

From Chris Whitworth.
THE Odeon building in Bath St is never going to be promoted as salvageable by the current owners when they can make huge amounts of money out of its reconstruction.

Senator Cohen has stated that he would consider a new development if it was of an exceptional standard.

However, if he were wearing his environmental hat, he would know that new constructions not only use vast amounts of precious water but also contribute huge amounts of carbon into the atmosphere as the cement/concrete dries.

Therefore, one would expect a Planning and Environment Minister with his background in Heritage to lean towards safeguarding and making good buildings such as the Odeon.

I would suggest that rather than allowing it to be turned into yet more lucrative flats which will benefit the developers far more than the people living in this most densely populated part of Jersey, ideas should be sought as to how best this iconic building can benefit the people.

As it has always been a public building and will now be a dominant feature overlooking the new Town Park I believe that it would make an ideal place for the younger members of this Island to frequent, similar to the world famous Trocadero venue in London.

    Agree,the Odeon is certainly iconic.
Was it designed by a stand, utterly, utterly, brilliant UK architect?
Still do not see why it cannot be a cinema again.

Freddies a joke, put the word Iconic and a so called famous architect to a project, then he is bound to approve it he might have a back ground in heritage but he does his best to destroy our heritage when ever he can!!!!!!

Chris, cannot agree with you . Along with most of jersey people l believe the Odeon building to be an eye sore. Careful redevelopment would produce work for the un- employed and services that would produce something for our times. Hanging on to the past has never been a good idea.

I agree. I would much rather go to a more centrally located cinema like the Odeon rather than traipse to the new version based in the failed Waterfront development site!

Whilst they’re at it, maybe they can move Pizza Hut and KFC into the town centre too…..much more convenient!

The Odean is hideous, not many people would miss it.

Let’s have something grand, like the frontage of a Stately Home overlooking the new park – something the island can be proud of and take our minds off the fact that there’s nowhere to park around there any more!

The Odeon should be flattened ASAP, even if the site was used as a temporary car park until Freddie finally agrees to plans that meet with his approval, that could take forever and a day.
At least, as a car park it would be serving a purpose, at the moment it is an eyesore.

I’m half with and half against.
If re-opening it as a cinema meant the eyesore on the waterfront could be demolished, (something that must be on the cards anyway as its lifespan must nearly be up),then I’m all for it remaining for re-use as a cinema.
Beautiful it isn’t, but it’s better than a lot of what’s new.
