Another bid to get GST off healthy foodstuffs

Wednesday 25th May 2011, 2:56PM BST.

Deputy Shona Pitman

A NEW attempt is being made to remove GST from some foods.

Just days after States Members voted against calls to exempt food and domestic fuel from GST, Deputy Shona Pitman has lodged plans for healthy foods to be exempt from the sales tax, which rises to five per cent next month.

If her plans are accepted by the States, Health Minister Anne Pryke will have three months to compile a list of so-called healthy foods.

Those foods would then be exempt from GST from 1 January next year.

    @2 Mark
Why just not stop giving away social HOUSES ? Social housing – why not two bed flat as a MAXIMUM, and for no longer that 2 years ?

Why not States stop wasting money, so GST would not be necessary at all ?

Giving (someone else’s) money away is cool, doesn’t hurt, and buys VOICES.

I am against GST as it is a regressive and complex taxation but this move by Shona Pitman nonsense. No vote from me.

    Mike @ no.2 : a very good suggestion.

Picking ‘healthy’ foods is such a ridiculous idea and will create just as much admin as any other exemption (if not more, having to define what is healthy and what isn’t). Also, Pitman is kidding herself if she really thinks that taking a couple of pence off fruit and veg will encourage families to eat it in place of what they are used to.

If we are going to expempt anything at all it should be all local produce – its easy to exempt, is generally going to be ‘healthy’ and it gives an advantage to local producers.

This proposal would make GST a regressive tax as poor people eat junk food.

Note to all COM members:- GST will remain on all foodstuff’s especially local and so called “healthy” foods, despite any well intentioned and mislead attempts to remove or mitigate them.

We must strive to marginalise those on lower incomes and force them to reconsider their position on the island. Further tax increases should be considered as soon as possible, particularly on childcare. The 5 year plan to drive as many of the lower classes as possible out of the island is on track and on target.

Anything made or from Jersey should be tax free. Fresh fish, veg, milk, butter , bread, cider, beer….

This is how you boost local economy. Any import should be taxed by GST.

With some bonuses of £500 000 and £300 000 for the 2 chief officers of Health and Social Services, it is no surprise that we have to bring the taxes up.

    It is out of control
