Mr President and the Jersey Royals
Thursday 26th May 2011, 2:59PM BST.
AMERICANS are sometimes surprised when they learn that New Jersey got its name from a tiny British island, but US President Barack Obama now knows all about Jersey Royals.
The President was served the renowned potatoes not once but twice during his visit to the UK this week.
They were on the menu at both a Downing Street barbecueyesterday and a Buckingham Palace banquet on Tuesday.
At the barbecue, Mr Obama and Prime Minister David Cameron served burgers to troops.

How uninteresting!

He knows it all because they buy Jersey royal at $10 a tonne for the states market…lol

Pleased to hear he enjoyed one of our famous exports
Good job ‘AIRFORCE ONE’ couldn’t land here, he might have asked for a visit. Couldn’t bring ‘THE BEAST’ with him as DVS would probably not allow it on our roads.
I’m sure he would be very impressed with what Jersey does for a living ie. help people/companies avoid paying tax where perhaps they should be paying it. He doesn’t like ‘offshore’ juristrictions, the secrecy and what they do.

Bet they were not sold through any English Supermarket or the taste would not be good!! I will not purchase only direct from Jersey

‘AMERICANS are sometimes surprised when they learn that New Jersey got its name from a tiny British island’.
Which Americans? Small minded Jersey mentality now being passed off in our press as news!
This story is small potatoes!

Not for the first time commentators on “This is Jersey” come across as small minded in every sense.
Jersey Royals have quietly come out in the last two years as a food sensation – celebrity chefs are cooking with them and raving about them, and the price has shot up – that is a cause for celebration for Jersey where it remains a key export. As with financial services and some aspects of our toursim (for example fine dining) it shows that the future of Jersey is to be the best in its field and represent quality. In spite of the moaners most of the world looks on in envy at our prosperity and quality of life.
I am not surprised that Buckingham Palace serves up the finest British produce but for the Americans to acknowledge this is absolutely remarkable – what no french fries??
The Jersey Royal has always been a fine potato but we can now honestly say that it is publicly ackonledged as the best potato in the world, with a brand perception that competes with the finest produce from any other nation.

BORING!!!
Better news is Obama is paid less than several states members!

Since when was Jersey a British Island? What is going on? Why do people keep ignoring our heritage and that we are 20 miles off the coast of France!!! Not Britain!!! Are we being occupied again but this time by the British? As for the potatoes.. I wish I could afford to have Jersey Royals for my dinner but of course the British have imposed VAT AND Freight WITH GST on TOP!………… “This isn’t just food, it’s everything we can get away with”.

God’s Mentor (7) ‘AMERICANS are sometimes surprised when they learn that New Jersey got its name from a tiny British island’.
Good assumptions can be wrong. My casual contact with an American tourist in Sicily knew all about Jersey as “That tax dodge place!”.

To Mike R:
Yes, the Jersey Royal is the finest potato in the world. I hope the next time an important dignitary visits London they get the opportunity to taste some Jersey cream, which is undoubtedly the best cream in the world. This is also explains why Jersey ice cream is the tastiest, creamiest ice cream in the world!
It’s just a pity you can’t get Jersey ice cream here on the mainland…aaahhh, how my mouth waters

Jambo, you say several states members get paid more than the president.
But the President can live for four years without spending a penny of his wages, i doubt the same could be said for the states members.

Jersey is part of the British Isles.
Hence why you get benefits of being so – which are too numerous to list.
