Any proposed future law changes need to take account of the potential cost to business, according to the new president of the Jersey Chamber of Commerce.

In his first speech as president, David Warr said that if businesses, especially small ones, were going to be encouraged to set up and grow, they needed to know that bureaucratic costs were not going to strangle them.

‘The Chamber will therefore demand a cost to business of every new piece of legislation that is proposed by the States. If new legislation is approved, then old laws should be removed,’ he said.

Mr Warr, the proprietor of coffee business Cooper & Co, was elected to replace Ray Shead at the organisation’s annual general meeting at the Pomme d’Or Hotel yesterday.
