Busy day for Jersey.com
Wednesday 22nd June 2011, 2:58PM BST.
JERSEY Tourism recorded one of its busiest ever days online yesterday after the Island appeared three times on national TV in one day.
It began in the morning when Jersey Telecom’s superfast broadband was featured on BBC Breakfast.
That was followed by an interview on the same programme with Jersey singer songwriter Nerina Pallot, and later that night ITV’s Countrywise programme dedicated an entire hour to the Island.

Win a share of £10,000
2012 is the year of the London Olympics and to celebrate this great event the Jersey Evening Post, in association with sponsors Ogier is giving all sporting clubs a chance to win a share of £10,000.

I thought the Breakfast feature on superfast broadband was baised and not at all representative of the service available for most Jersey residents. It showed one building ( Castle Quay ) that benefitted from this speed of broadband 1 gig which is more than 500 times faster than the 2 meg service I’m getting.
It didn’t mention that the superfast service was not available island wide, nor did it say that the rest of the island pay twice as much as the UK for a service that’s 10 times slower.
The Countrywise programme was excellent, if a touch biased in Jersey’s favour.

It’s just a pity now that all those people will suddenly find out that the price of a long weekend here in Jersey is the same price as a two-week all-inclusive in Sharm-el-Sheikh or a Spanish costa.

i watched countrywise last night and was very inpresed,gr8 that they did not mention finance and only showed the best about jersey .thankyou countywise for promoting my island so well

Yes, wonderful that, but I have still found it impossible to book one bed in a hotel and ferry online.
I have just spent maybe 15 minutes on the phone booking it with Channel Islands Direct.
Please get your act together Jersey.

What I found funny was that they avoided filming town, the water front, the mess around the Odeon and this new park. They did not interview any of the 52% of the population that cannot afford to own their own home never mind a boat of a Jersey cow. They didn’t talk to anybody that’s unemployed and they avoided subjects like GST on drink and food, seagulls that colonise urban areas, over crowding and car pollution. But hey, what did we expect eh?
Mulvie Le Phew I agree 100% with your comment on the broadband.
Some days , I can’t even stream on BBC I player with a 2 meg line.
Frustrating when you compare the prices, and they are advertising for the fastest broadband in Europe!!!

Its nice to see that people are taking an interest in Jersey again, although this does not always relate to visits.
Whilst I was away on holiday, a lot of people would mention to us that we live on such a beautiful island and they would love to holiday there again as they have such wonderful memories.
Unfortunately these can’t be experienced once again as the cost of visiting here is well beyond the means of the people wanting to come, and those who can afford would rather go elsewhere for the same price.
I really think Jersey has to realise that it is no longer an affordable tourist destination, and no amount of positive PR and advertising is going to change that, and spend the money on something else which may make a difference to the island.
Unless someone can think of a way of discounting travel to the island, people will continue to prefer cheaper destinations with (almost) guaranteed sunshine, I just wish this could be accepted so we can stop wasting money on tourism.
I admit that this is a shame and would love things to be like they were 20 years ago, but unfortunately life moves on and we have to move with it.

They cherry plcked the bits they wanted shown of course. Must not show jersey in a bad light. Every thing honky dory here.

@1 (Mulvie Le Phew):
Actually it said it’s the first residential installation of 1Gb/s. And 1Gb/s fibre is coming to the much of the island in time. Also, through most of the three main population centres in Jersey the telephone lines are mostly fantastic line quality, and the internet connection is far better than you generally get in the UK. I live in town, and I get almost exactly 20Mb/s off peak, and around 15Mb/s at peak times. The UK does have ISPs better than JT, but actually the vast majority of ISPs are pretty awful, and many places are only covered by a few ISPs. Average broadband speed in the UK is around 6Mb/s.
If you had said this 5 years ago I’d have agreed with you, but things have moved on *very* rapidly here. JT’s mobile network is now faster than any I’ve experienced outside of London. If you’re expecting high speeds in the country, you’re probably going to be let down, but perhaps you should look toward 4G to provide that rather than landline.
If you’re struggling and you live somewhere in town, I’d get your phone line checked, and perhaps the hardware at the end. Did you know that many people’s internet speeds are limited by their wifi or router, and not their internet connection?

And what do you pay for your broadband? JT charge £49.99 per month with a 40 gig download limit for the 20 meg service, that’s for broadband only, it doesn’t include line rental .
By comparison Sky charge £7.50 if an existing Sky customer and £10 per month if not for 20 meg. They include a free router, free 12 month Mcafee internet security, free evening & weekend calls and no download limit.
Virgin offer a 30 meg service with unlimited weekend free calls if you have a Virgin phone line, free router, free internet security, unlimited downloads all for £13.90 per month and as for actual download speed – they won Top10.com Fastest Home Broadband Award 2009 & 2010. Best Super-Fast Broadband in the Simplify Digital 2011 Customer Choice Awards.
So JT are nearly 7 times more expensive than Sky and offer less and nearly 4 times the cost of Virgin and offer a 50% slower download.
So £49.99 for JT’s 20 meg broadband a bargain?
if the cost increase is proportionate to the speed increase when superfast arrives it will cost £2499.50 per month.
JT – pay more, get less.

Countrywise re-opened my eyes. We all moan about Jersey life, we all moan about the cost of everything, but ITV’s program reminded me how lucky I am to live here. Sure, it’s not utopia, but it’s also not an inner city. Yesterday morning, instead of my normal 3 cups of coffee and despair at another boring day ahead, I put my trainers and shorts on and ran along the beach from St Aubin to St Helier. It was great, I loved it. Sometimes we just need a nudge to appreciate the good things in our lives

“It’s NOT ‘ON’ Jersey, it’s IN Jersey!! Shows the locals from the non-locals ”
The “locality” is shown only by in-breeding. The other 90% of the population comes from outside this pretty but poorly run island.
Over half of the population does not have English ad their mother tongue, but many of them use it better that the ones that do.
We should get the our act together and put the Jersey beans in the field and start running the show properly

We watched Countrywise online having missed it on the television the night before. Seeing the programme made us look forward even more to our visit in August. Jersey is a regular destination for us but we have agree that the cost of visiting the island is becoming prohibitive, as just having booked the flight from Luton to the island (rather late I admit) cost £417 for the two of us!!

When I visit other Islands around the world, how come the residents are all proud of their islands despite sometimes having so much less than we do in Jersey.
Isn’t it about time we took pride in Jersey instead of continually trying to run it down?
All these negative comments can be seen by anyone, surely that’s not the opinion you want people to have of the Island?

On a slightly different note just thought I,d mention that several years ago Jersey Tourism
announced they wanted to get rid of the “bucket and spade brigade.” I,d like to congratulate them, well done, 100% success on that. Though its now the “blue-rinse” brigade and they probably spend even less. I seem to remember Dave De Carteret being all for getting rid of the above B&S type tourist but I could be wrong??

@ Beaumont:
JT reflect Jersey very well:
It s great but very expensive.
It is nice to appreciate the fresh air,the beach and the sea but the problem is the quality of life once you are in your home.
(And Mr Cohen, if you read this, I am not suggesting to build flats on Elizabeth castle)
Who wouldn’t like a bigger house or flat? As the weather is rubbish 80% of the year you do happen to spend more time in than out.
Improvement could be done on opening hours for restaurants, pubs and club.
French time will give us more day light, specially in the winter.
A cheaper way to get in and out of the rock would help locals and tourists.
And someone to check/regulate oil, fuel, gas, electricity and food prices as they are in my opinion, taking the p…ss BIG time

Andy (comment 10) I agree with you. We left Jersey five years ago but a neighbour of ours who knows we moved away from Jersey was telling us about his recent visit to the island having been ten years previously. He was disappointed by how built up it had become and too commercialised. He was also horrified at the cost of everything and he is a man with ample spare cash who travels extensively but doesn’t like being ripped off. However Countrywise was nice to watch and may tempt some people in to visiting.

@14. Mulvie Le Phew:
Have a look at JT Complete’s pricing (I recently switched back from Newtel). Remember that JT had until recently had their pricing fixed so that competition could flourish. Alternatively, Newtel and Sure offer far more competitive pricing than JT’s standard plans.
Also those services you mention will never get the speed they claim. I know people with Virgin’s optical service (which is fibre to the cab, not the home like the ‘superfast’ service coming here) and they get about 10-15Mb/s rather than the 30Mb/s.

Countrywise was a wonderful programme to watch. The very best of what Jersey has to offer. Born in Jersey, we left two years ago because everything was so expensive. Sadly as beautiful as Jersey is we will never return apart from brief visits to family. It is a shame that from my point of view we had to leave Jersey to get a better quality of life. Where did it go so wrong.

oh come on people….some fantastic positive publicity and all most of you can do is still complain!
Well done Mike Tait and the PR team at Jersey Tourism for getting a national show such as countrywise to do a whole show – it’s all about awareness and has shown our beautiful island in a fantastic light.
The people moaning about it don’t realise how much hard work goes into getting visitors to be aware that the island exists let alone actually visit, whether it be a whole hour on country wise, 10 minutes on the one show, 5 minutes on BBC breakfast or 1 minute on the apprentice.
Jersey is not as expensive as many of you say – it is all relative. We don’t pay 20% VAT, we don’t charge tax on anyone sending postal items over the value of £40 like in the UK, we don’t pay as much income tax, average wages are much higher and the quality of life is immensely better than most areas of the UK. This is just my opinion of course but I do see that the grass isn’t always greener.
We have wonderful countryside and coastlines and we should be proud to shout about it.
The only thing I am ever ashamed of in Jersey is that I share this amazing island with so many people who don’t appreciate how lucky they are.
I think it is good to remember that the reason an all inclusive is so cheap in Egypt is because the staff are paid so little.
If Jersey attempted to lower the minimum wage to encourage tourism profitability and boost the economy who would support that?
Jersey is a green eco destination with sustainably farmed shellfish, world famous cows and agriculture and blue beaches.
Not a polluted third world country with underpaid staff.

s (22) wanted to get rid of the “bucket and spade brigade.”
That was no challenge for Tourism with our tax payer pounds, the ‘bucket and spade brigade’ was already in Spain!

Where is the evidence that people aren’t coming because they don’t know enough about the island?
It is far more likely that either they can’t afford it or Jersey is not to their taste.
Remember also that most of the population regard visitors as an added nuisance in an already overcrowded environment and don’t really want more than their friends and family to visit.
As a cynic I believe that most television programmes are made either because slots need filling or presenters whose faces fit need keeping in work. It’s probably more about bringing the crew to Jersey for a jolly than bringing future tourists.

It never ceases to amaze me the non stop negativity of people on this site. Times are not great over here, but look beyond our shores and is it great anywhere else?…….. I dont think so! Some people must lead very sad lives thinking of what they can moan about each day. We have a beautiful Island, its not perfect but where is? No doubt the old moaners will reply to my entry with some comment, but do I mind…..NO….Im going out to enjoy my beautiful Island!

I didn’t see the programme as I was out socialising (or being ripped off) in the island at the time! I have just returned from a 4 1/2 day visit which cost me hundreds and hundreds of pounds. I have visited Jersey many times before, but it is only this time that I have realised just what a rip off the place has become. Prices are TOTALLY THROUGH THE ROOF on most products – especially considering the lack of VAT and lower duty payable.
I’m from Northern Ireland and have been going to Jersey for over a decade, but recently have been travelling to Cornwall for my summer holidays as it is similar to Jersey but MUCH, MUCH cheaper.
Good luck to all those who can still afford to “enjoy” Jersey, but for me it has become too expensive to justify as a main holiday destination anymore.

I suppose JT could stand for Jersey tourism or Jersey telecom, both of whom get a right slating in here again.
Mulvie has an “E vendetta” against Jersey telecom, a serial JT moaner and axe grinder. The classic troll tactic of not answering posters points when they make him/her look stupid. Example being in the Jt cut people off story when he/she said they need their mobile for customers call out, but old Mulvie refused to pay for the service. Customers must mean alot to you Mulvie if you or your employer will not pay a contract mobile for your important customers??
Bet you wont answer in here either will you?
Its was a coup to get all that coverage on TV in one day. Hopefully it will bring in some Tourism and some money to the Island.
Tough times for all.

Ex JT, I don’t like any company exploiting it’s client base. JT have had it too good for too long, forcing people to pay to reactivate a mobile phone that was bought for emergency use and still retains credit is extortion.
“but old Mulvie refused to pay for the service”.
I’m 42, I don’t consider myself old, I didn’t refuse to pay for the service, I paid the ransom and reactivated my phone.
JT are stiffing it’s customers, they are blatently taking advantage of their situation as prime telecoms provider and owner of the islands telecommunication infrastructure.
Why is our 20 meg broadband 7 times more expensive that the comparative service in the UK.
The argument that JT’s payg policy is comparable to other providers is irrelevant, no one should be cut off for failing to use their payg mobile if they have credit. Why don’t JT text people a month before cutoff and say if this phone is still in use respond to this text. that way they could re use non active numbers and refrain from disconnecting a lifeline for it’s customers.
They claim that a text is sent but I’ve never received one and I don’t know anyone who has.

30. Bob at JT. do the outdated/old telephone cablespart poles dangling from some houses around town serve any purpose. Is it not prudent for JT to remove these eyesores nwo that the new/quicker technology has emerged.

Having already contributed to this thread @38, I don’t feel so bad about joining the hijacking.
I have a JT cellphone number but as I don’t live permanently in Jersey it only gets switched on when I visit.
Normal text messages are discarded from the server, in any case, after about three days if the phone has not been switched on to download them . This may be why occasional users are apparently not receiving notification. However, it shouldn’t be too difficult for service messages to be activated by logging back on to the system.
On the ocasions when I have come back and found my service suspended I have gone to the customer service desk, topped up and this has been added to my frozen credit. All is not lost, anyway, as I have the same six figure number with a “Keeble and Wareless” (Sure)prefix. They have never suspended my service.
It should not be beyond the capabilities of JT’s computers to recognise the usage pattern of a low user or an expat and flag up the account as not discarded.
Perhaps Mulvie and exJT should have resurrected the previous thread about JT cellphones?

Just got back from visiting Marmaris in Turkey. I have to congratulate them on the fabulous harbour – with a great variety of restaurants all having great views over the harbour.
If Jersey could tear down the rubbish hotels on the waterfront and allow good restaurants and entertainment to be built instead we might accomplish a big improvement in the island – providing more jobs and services which people would use.

Oh Mulvie, for you to care about your customers you should pay for a CONTRACT.

So JT don’t care about their non contracted customers. I have a personal mobile on contract, my bills for calls are 29p per month, the other £10 is contract, I’ll be ditching it as soon as the contract expires. BTW I paid £85 for this phone on a 2 year JT contract, the same phone was £65 on payg in the UK.
There is no defending the indefensible, vulnerable groups of people are being robbed because they only use their phones for ocassional and emergency use ( and don’t tell me that generous JT permit 999 calls covers all aspects of emergency use )this is shameful profiteering.

I know we get ripped off by the fuel guys, but in their defense, if they’ve filled up their tanks at a certain price, they’re not going to drop the price of fuel until that (more expensive) fuel has been used up and they stock up with more fuel at the new lower rate.
Having said that, you can imagine that crude prices might drop and the stations just ‘forget’ to drop their prices accordingly…

It is possible, sometimes, to play this to maximum advantage, Julie.
A while back, I bought £50 worth of cooking oil, about 30p per litre cheaper than diesel, at Sainsbury’s while it was two for the price of one. this entitled me to a voucher for 5p per litre off fuel. I topped up the nearly empty tank and filled jerrycans up to the maximum discountable amount (100 litres). Did something similar at Tesco as well.
Mixed at roughly one third diesel (or even less in warm weather) it is quite a saving. Won’t work in Jersey as cooking oil is far more expensive than diesel!

If tourist wants to come and enjoy the beaches, the littles lanes, the architecture and the cows , they are coming for a treat.
