Year of the Jersey in China?
Friday 24th June 2011, 3:00PM BST.
THE Chinese Ministry of Commerce is expected to accept an invitation to send an official delegation to Jersey as efforts to increase trade links between the two jurisdictions continue.
And a separate similar invitation to return to the Island has been extended to senior officials from the key region of Tianjin.
The invitation to return was given after a Jersey Finance group received an ‘outstanding’ welcome in Tianjin during a visit to China last week to build trade links.
Jersey Finance chief executive Geoff Cook said that the move to invite the Chinese commerce ministry was significant as government ministries in China were much more involved in commerce than in many other countries.

Dave, ethics and considerations like the one you mentioned don’t come into it when Jersey is looking for new business, I thought everyone knew that. Only if an individual or country is on some prescribed list would our Finance professionals not do business with said types. I know of one of our overseas bank operations over here that has a Jersey domiciled fund which sets up and primarily invests in those shanty huts for indentured slave workers that have helped Dubai’s building expansion. The bank concerned comes out of an ex apartide country so might explain their lack of moral judgement.

Yes but Happy Valley race track is in Hong Kong, which is as much a part of China as Jersey is part of the UK. And the China already has its gambling hub, its called Macau.
If Jersey really thinks its going to challenge Hong Kong as a place for the Chinese to use as a financial services hub then it is seriously in deep doo doo.
Hong Kong has all Jersey has. It own independant government, its own independant law system (basically still the British one) that is transparent, a low tax rate and much more.

Just who is deluding themselves? With a population of 1.3 billion and 4,000 years of history and a man in space, just what has Jersey got to offer that China might want? Jèrriais?
Ben is right Jersey is more likely to need Hong Kong than Beijing need Jersey? I think somebody has had a nice trip out east at our expense.

We cannot blame individuals or their businesses for the crimes of their government – I am sure that many of us would not like to be judged by the actions (or inaction) of the States of Jersey.
Naturally there are human rights concerns in China, in particular with regard to State Censorship and freedom of expression but don’t forget they’re coming here, let’s lead by example, show them the benefits of how prosperous a democratci society can be.
They’re still not as rich as us…

So lately we’ve been trying to drum up trade with Russia, India, China and Israel.
Of course none of these countries have a history of human rights abuse or corruprion. Neither are they they kind of country where people are getting very rich very quickly, no questions asked and then looking to stash, invest, or dare I say clean up their cash. Guess it all depends where your moral compass is pointing eh..

Oh well, yeah this is where Hong Kong is letting itself down. The chinese are just investing in property and pushing rent and property prices sky high. All this to avoid Chinese tax.
I guess if this is what Jersey wants to do, invite the Chinese to buy up all the property in the island and push prices up to silly levels, then heh, were in business!

Jersey is chasing the RMB, well why not. So many ‘dodgy’ deals done here in mainland China its just part of the culture.
I hope Jersey COM can learn from their new friends, then maybe Jersey will be back on the road to recovery very fast. There is a lot of pollution here in China, but then, they do make most of the worlds products, so the pollution is concentrated. But on the other hand, there are extraordinary initiatives to clean places up and to create new green cities. Some of you will argue differently, but the Chinese do have the money and the will to do it, now its a matter of timing.
Jersey COM should try managing 1.3billion people with diverse cultures, industries and interests, not to mention a few unstable neighbouring countries.
How many people turned up against GST? Does the COM actually listen and do as the electorate want? Jersey public vote people in and what happens to the policies and mandates to which you voted for?
Yet with so much political power the COM seem to be missing the boat all the time. China (different scale) are the political power, they not only don’t miss the boat, they build it, crew it and navigate it through rough waters and trade.
