Plémont decision ‘saddens’ National Trust
Saturday 25th June 2011, 2:57PM BST.
THE National Trust for Jersey has said it is ‘hugely saddened’ with the States decision to reject further protection for the Plémont headland.
While debating the Island plan this week, States Members voted to extend a coastal national park earmarked for St Ouen’s Bay to Mourier Valley, Wolf’s Caves and parts of Gorey. However, the House rejected by two votes a proposal to further extend the park to the headland at Plémont, which is the site of the disused Pontin’s holiday village.
Celia Jeune, the president of the trust, said: ‘Naturally I am very pleased that the States were able to support Senator Francis Le Gresley’s amendments concerning Mourier Valley, Wolf’s Caves and the Gorey Coastal Plain.
‘However, I am hugely saddened that our States Members seem to have forgotten about The Line in the Sand campaign and the 7,000 participants who demonstrated so clearly that our entire coastline is very precious.’

Two stories side by side. Yes, lets desecrate what is a wonderful coastal wilderness, with more pseudo-mansion development and yes, lets protect a mostly run-down glasshouse complex next to an industrial estate. What a brave new world we live in.

The States really must buy out the owners of the Plemont site, (at a fair profit), or offer them a land swap somewhere else where they can develop.
This area is too precious to have a development on it.
A trip to the east of St. Malo where there are many cliff walks and preserved areas of great beauty would convince our politicians of this area’s importance to the island.
(I would not object to some of our precious tax money being spent on day trip Condor Ferries tickets and a light lunch for them).
This is much more important than the new town park.

Please just get on with it and build much needed houses. Where were the national trust when they were proposing the debacle that is now the waterfront?
Or the incinerator?
Or Portelet?
Or Castle Quay?
Or Queens Valley Reservoir?
Or any of the other monstrosities that have gone up all over this island.
Just build on it please

4. Just build on it
Do you not look at the property pages (and pages) in the JEP, there are thouands of unsold properties in this island, we do not want any more thank you.
If and when they are built they will certainly not be ‘much needed houses’ they will be at least £1 million each, probably more.

If they do build at Plémont, there will be a queue of potential buyers from the cliff tops back to Portinfer. It has to be one of the ultimate locations with panoramic views of the other islands.
Money’s going to talk at Plémont. Nature won’t get a look in.

So thats 7,000 people turned up for Line in the Sand….. and 93,000 people stayed a home, work and just got on with their daily lives.
Jersey is a small place, so they could have turned up if they thought it was important enough.

Protect the coastline before we look like a Costa!! Which, in some places, it already does.
