Medals flow in – two of them gold
Tuesday 28th June 2011, 3:00PM BST.
TEAM Jersey more than doubled their medal total on day two of the NatWest Island Games yesterday, but still dropped a place to fifth in the table.
Starting with eight on day one, they have now claimed 20 – more than any other island bar runaway leaders Guernsey who have 23, but crucially they have 13 golds to Jersey’s four.
The two golds won yesterday were both secured in emphatic style, with Zane Duquemin smashing a 14-year-old record in the shot putt and the squash squad claiming team gold after clear victories over Guernsey then the Isle of Wight.
Claire Wilson won a battling silver in the ladies 1,500 metres and there were two more in the pool, with JJ Gallichan setting an Island record in coming second in the 1,500m freestyle and the 4 x 50 women’s relay squad of Emily Bashforth, Ebony Jacklin, Maria Koot and Kerrie Smith finishing just behind a strong Faroes squad.
Five bronzes were also secured in the pool.
Silver was also unearthed on the ranges, through Mary Norman and Sarah Pallot in the 50m prone smallbore rifle team event. Marksman Steve Le Couilliard also hit the silver standard in the 300m centre fire prone rifle, just missing out on gold by three shots.
