Gold for Sue Townsend and Kim Ashton

TEAM JERSEY almost doubled their medals tally on the third day of competition in the NatWest Island Games yesterday, although even the winning of five golds did not move them up from fifth place in the table.

Guernsey, with 20 golds, look to have too big a lead to be caught at the very top, but only the Sarnians have bagged a larger haul of medals – and not that many more in total.

Jersey’s new-found cycling star and former badminton team member Kim Ashton won double gold in the road race, individual and team awards, to go along with the two bronzes she gained in the criterium event on Sunday.

Another to take his personal tally to two golds was throwing star Zane Duquemin who added the discus title to the shot crown he won earlier in the week. It was also a family double as sister Shadine won her first Games medal, gold of course, in the women’s shot.

At the other end of the age scale veteran shooters Dave Ward and Derek Bernard won gold in the 25m centre fire pistol event

Jersey’s footballers kept up their 100 per cent record with a 2-1 win over Greenland, safe in the knowledge they won’t have to face the disgraced Rhodes for at least another six years after Games officials handed out a six year ban for their misdemeanours against the Island side on Monday night.

Archer Lucy O’Sullivan was officially confirmed as the silver medallist in the Single FITA compound event, 11 points adrift of Aalin George of the Isle of Man.

O’Sullivan also took a bronze in the team event alongside Daniel D’Orleans and Shayne Munday.
