GOLDEN girl Kim Ashton made a promising return to UK racing on Sunday with sixth place in the National Women’s Team Road Race Series.

The last time the Caesarean Cycling Club rider raced in England she broke her wrist in an accident just months before the NatWest Island Games, where she recovered in time to win five medals including three gold.

Ashton, a winner of the JEP’s Bill Custard Memorial Award for her performance in the Isle of Wight, proved her mettle, racing with Inverse CyClaim in the Northamptonshire event at the weekend with a focused and determined effort to make the top six.

But the 23-year-old had hoped for even better and said: ‘I’m a bit disappointed with my result as I know I could have got a higher placing but I just didn’t have the legs during the last climb.’
