Centenier Michael Paddock and Advocate Richard Renouf

THERE will be a contested election for the position of Constable of St Ouen for the first time in 108 years.

The parish’s current Chef de Police, Michael Paddock, and Procurer du Bien Public, Advocate Richard Renouf, have both declared that they will be standing for office on 19 October.

It will be the first contested election for the position since 18 August 1903, and will elect a replacement for Ken Vibert, who is retiring after almost 18 years leading the parish.

The two candidates, who are friends and neighbours, were both encouraged to stand after being contacted by parishioners asking them to do so.

At least it’s going to the ballot box in St. Ouen. The duly elected Connetable will have a vote in the States assembly that affects me and my family. I did not have the opportunity to vote for that person. All elected States members should have an island wide mandate. A council of ministers at the moment, made up of deputies who have no such mandate. When are the masses going to wake up?
