Sorry – Jersey is already bulging at the seams
Wednesday 27th July 2011, 4:10PM BST.
From Ann Chamier.
I AM totally astounded by the fact that there are so many problems in the Island that the ordinary man in the street can see but is powerless to do anything about, and yet we have Members of the States who do have the power and yet either do not see them or choose to ignore them.
For instance, why do the authorities not say to those coming into the Island, either to work or live, that they are welcome here so long as they do not transgress our laws. If they do, they will be sent back immediately whence they came.
But no! Such excuses as ‘Oh well, they are married and have a family here and because of their human rights …’ are trotted out as to why they should not be evicted. I’m sorry, but these people should have thought of that before they did whatever they unlawfully did. This way, those from Jersey who have been convicted would have room in the jail.
And as for their so-called human rights, if they cannot behave like well-behaved humans, then they have no human rights, in my book. As it is, all these convicted persons are being kept in the jail at the expense of the taxpayer, because that is what it boils down to.
The States have no money, it is our money. Not only that, these people are expecting all the luxuries of life, such as colour TV, a cell to themselves, being fed two to three meals a day and so on.
I am sure there are some of the poorer people living in the community who cannot afford such things and yet have done nothing wrong.
How is it that there are people employed by the States on contracts that include a substantial bonus pay-off when they leave? Are these people not paid sufficient money by way of a salary when they are working?
Again, whose money is being used to pay this?
As a nurse, I do not recall being paid such a sum when I retired, and I bet the present-day nurses are not.
Why do States Members insist on building more and more offices when there are plenty standing empty around the town?
Why do they insist on getting more and more people to come to the Island when the infrastructure is groaning at the seams, the town, at certain times of each day, is at a standstill because of the traffic, and patients are having to wait weeks for appointments. The list goes on.
Come on, people of Jersey, let’s get some clear-thinking people in the States who have some common sense.
Just remember some of these points when the elections come along.

This seems like a bit of a random rant – not focused at anything in particular.

I don’t imagine that there is a J cat’s chance in hell that #1 reads the Morning Star.
Neither, do I imagine, does Ms Chamier!

Yes, Andy it does seem like a random rant but it does raise a number of issues which are of concern to many residents and wise election candidates might care to consider them.
I’m not sure, though, if the prison authorities should waste time and money trying to source monochrome television sets in order to make the regime more punitive.

The answer to many of your questions is money. You have to get your investors to invest so that others can get their cut. What they build or develop is not the most pressing issue so long as projects complete everyone gets paid.

Where can you buy the Morning Star in Jersey? I’ve not seen it anywhere and have to read it online.

The majority of local people agree that allowing the massive increase in the population is the biggest betrayal perpetrated by the COM of this tiny island.

@ Gino yes very correct Gino we are very fed up of people coming to our wonderful island and thinking it is their right to abuse the privileges everyone else has provided for OUR islanders not every Tomas Davida and Henrivenzuala who comes to the rock!!! this island needs a sort out rapidly and non locals taking hierarchy over poor less fortunate folk should not be allowed my dear..,

Typical Tory rhetoric, I notice how crime and immigration are somehow assumed to be inextricably linked plus the fact that apparently having 2-3 meals a day is a luxury.
Let me see if I can take a guess at some of Ann’s other deeply rooted convictions:
- Human Rights aren’t a template for us to treat everyone with dignity but a way for clever lawyers to get their clients off the hook.
- Bring back Capital Punishment, if we kill a few innocent people too bad, they were probably guilty of something anyway.
- Young mothers are all sl*ts and don’t deserve any welfare from the government, even if they and their families have paid into the system all their lives.
- Every social ill at its root is caused by lack of prisons and a Xenophobic immigration policy which only allows White Europeans in.
Do you Jersey people ever tire of being walking Stereotypes?!

Interesting, but how about this, one of our children goes to the Uk and has a family, maybe even grandchildren then he or she commits a crime, would we be happy that they are sent back to Jersey (Indeed would they still have qualies after say 10 years) and would we then welcome his family to live here, of course the answer is no but we always want 1 rule for others and 1 for ourselves.
Human rights are there to protect everybody, if we let people live here and they commit a crime then why should another government bear the cost of looking after that person whilst Jersey has benefitted from his tax and social security payments whilst he lived here?

İ totally agree Let us send back all the Doctors Nurses Teachers etc that are not of Jersey heritage. Let us still put up with a government that stops free school milk to save money but (correct me if İ am wrong) still allows states members to subsidised food and drink
Oh yes lets do something in the next election İ remember the same old shout when the States members gave themselves a 1000 pound pay rise in Febuary then put a tax freeze on Public sector workers in March The same people will still be in power in 10 years because the island hasn,t got the guts to do anything about it.
