Emily Bashforth set new junior and senior Island marks for the 100m freestyle
JERSEY swimmers from AIB Tigers opened their National Youth Championship account in brilliant fashion yesterday with two Island records on the opening day at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.
At just 15 Emily Bashforth set a new junior and senior Island best as she bettered her own 100m freestyle record in both the heats and semi-final to qualify for the final, in eighth, with 58.72 seconds.
Tom Gallichan was also in flying form as the 18-year-old reached the semi-final of the 100m backstroke but it was his performance in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay which had everyone excited.
Swimming for Liverpool City, due to his move there to start university later this year, he smashed the 100m freestyle record on the lead out with 52.22 sec, bettering Alexis Militis’s previous best of 52.61 of six years’ ago. The relay team finished fourth.
