JERSEY is one step closer to burning waste from both Guernsey and Alderney following talks held this week.

Both islands are looking to ship their non-recyclable waste to Jersey to be burnt in the new £100 million incinerator at La Collette.

Guernsey public service officials visited Jersey on Monday to discuss the idea with the Transport department. John Rive, assistant director of solid waste at Transport and Technical Services, said: ‘Jersey was able to say that yes, it is technically possible for Guernsey to ship its waste to us, as we have spare capacity in the incinerator.

‘However, at this time, Jersey is unable to give exact costs as we are only in the final stages of taking over the energy-from-waste plant from the contractors and will not know concrete figures until we have been running the plant for a little while.’

Not content with just Guernsey then? Jersey should have been the one exporting their rubbish to burn, but no when all around the world places are looking at reducing their waste problem, we have Jersey wanting to import other peoples. Fantastic shining example of its all about the money….

I thought the incinerator required a constant supply of waste to keep it going efficiently. Anyone want to bet that we’ll end up buying the waste from Guernsey and Alderney?
