People don’t want to shop on a Sunday

Friday 29th July 2011, 3:00PM BST.

From Isabel Jeune.
GERALD Voisin is to be applauded for standing up for shop workers regarding Sunday opening.

The only big stores to open will be the greedy ones which currently force their staff to work late nights and Sundays in the run-up to Christmas. These stores have no regard for the welfare of their staff. All they see are pound signs.

Do the States seriously believe that people who have been working all week want to go in and do it all over again on a Sunday? Would they or people working in offices want to do this? I doubt it.
I have met several visitors over the years who say how pleasant it is being able to walk around town on a Sunday just window shopping and then going for a coffee.

Jersey is unique in that the shops don’t open on Sundays. Why are the States hell-bent on turning us into Little England? We are an Island, and as such, we are different and should stay that way, otherwise visitors will decide to stay at home or go elsewhere.

Incidentally, on a recent visit to the UK, I took a walk into town of a Sunday morning, to see just how many shops were open. The only ones were charity shops, cut- price book shops, one major supermarket (Morrison’s, even though there were three other supermarkets in the town) and a few small shops, all of which were open from 11 am to 3 pm.

My neice said the last thing she wants to do is shop on a Sunday, and she added that most people felt the same. We already have the Co-op and Spar open on Sundays.

It is a sad person who is so desperate to buy an item from a large store that they cannot wait until Monday.
