Into the dragons’ den …

Saturday 30th July 2011, 2:58PM BST.

Keeper Dan Lay gets up close and personal with one of Durrell’s new young charges.

TRYING to tame one of nature’s fiercest predators doesn’t sound like most people’s idea of a dream job – but that is the reality for two members of staff at Durrell, who have started to train two Komodo dragons ready for when the reptiles get older.

Growing up to ten feet long when reaching adulthood, the rare lizards need taming now so that as they get older they can be handled by humans.

The training is already under way and is being carried out by Durrell’s head of herpetology, Gerado Garcia, and keeper Dan Lay.
