HUNDREDS of Poles attended last night’s mass at St Thomas’, most of them with their families or in groups.

Many of them did not know those who died, but felt the need to come to the church to pay their respects.

One of Polish girls, named Katarzyna, said: ‘I did not know them personally but I have got a feeling that I might have met her somewhere. I came over because I feel really sorry.’

Poles also have foreign-language friends. One of them, a Frenchman living in Upper Midvale Road said, that he had a need to join the mass. He said: ‘I saw her many times, while she was walking around. But mostly I was seeing her only with the kids.’

During the mass father Stanislaw Adamiak asked the Polish community for ‘deep prayer’.

What more can anyone say that hasnt already been said. I would hope that the Polish people are very wrong in their fears that they may suffer blame and abuse for the actions of this one man. I hope that the people of Jersey, whatever their nationility, are bigger than this. I am sure we all united in grief at the tragic end to these young lives. Unfortunately atrocities like this are all too common these days – so please show compassion, give help and support. Help unite all races in Jersey – do not cause further hurt. We are all one race – the human race!!
