Ed Scott tucks into some spaghetti
MOST Islanders enjoy a plate of food and a glass of something cold at a summer festival, but finance worker Edward Scott took the concept of a seaside snack to another level by winning both the spaghetti eating and the yard of ale competitions at this week’s Gorey Fete.
Mr Scott (38), first consumed ‘a good plateful’ of spaghetti in less than two minutes at Thursday’s event to win the first prize. And not content with that victory, he went on to down a yard of ale in 17 seconds – just 15 minutes after his mammoth meal of pasta.
Mr Scott said: ‘It has been a long-time ambition of mine to bring the Gorey double back to St Ouen. I had previously finished second in the spaghetti-eating competition, but to be honest I think the guy who won that year dropped most of it on the floor. I also came second in the yard of ale competition. But those records were back in 2001. I have always liked eating and drinking and I’m a big fan of spaghetti. I started on spaghetti hoops and alphabetti-spaghetti when I was younger, and worked my way up.’

Well done Ed – I knew you could do it, it was just a matter of time, practice and patience. Not many can do the double, and you did it with style, grace and honesty, not a drop on the floor or left on the plate. Long live Ed, king of the guzzle.

Astonishing achievement by Mr Scott. An Italian fan commented that the Italian technique he appears to have adopted for the spaghetti eating would have been a key factor in the win. I sincerely hope he continues to push the envelope and would strongly encourage the organisers of Gorey fête to consider establishing an additional gourmet event so Scott can attempt the treble. Hats off to Mr Scott.
