More than 500 objections to Ouaisné Hill homes plan
Saturday 20th August 2011, 9:22AM BST.

The caravan site in St Brelade
THERE have been more than 500 objections to plans to build houses on a caravan site dating back to before the Occupation.
Planning have received 526 objections to plans to build eight houses on the site of Ollivier Farm, on the right-hand side on the way down Ouaisné Hill. Nineteen tenants face eviction, because they rent the land, which houses temporary caravans and modern chalets, on an annual basis. The area is in a green zone and the site has been established in its current use since the 1930s.
Planning’s development control director, Peter Le Gresley, said that he could not confirm that the number of objections was a record, but said: ‘It is a very high figure. It’s an emotive issue to do with people potentially losing their homes.’
Mr Le Gresley said that Ouaisné was seen as ‘a sensitive spot’ and added that plans to build one house opposite the Smugglers pub at the bottom of Ouaisné Hill had also led to a number of objections.

KIT 4 CLUBS
Win a share of £10,000
2012 is the year of the London Olympics and to celebrate this great event the Jersey Evening Post, in association with sponsors Ogier is giving all sporting clubs a chance to win a share of £10,000.
The owner of this Green Zone should of got rid of all the scruffy caravans and huts first before making an application. I’ve been down there and I am shocked people can even live like that in the 21st Century.
i lived there a few years back .
it was a bad place to live as they don’t have toilets and proper drainage .at one time raw sewage was going in to the pond where the rare agile frog lives .bit of a dump really with old cars dumped and rubbish buried in the ground .gypsies would love it .

I visit Jersey regularly and have done for the last 30 years- it is my second home. Why is it that no-one stands up to these developers like Dandara? The Portelet development for one is an absolute eyesore. I fear that in the next 30 years the island could just be a concrete jungle
Report abuse
Whatever happens the area at Ouaisné Hill needs to be cleaned up and handed back to nature at the very least or have proper houses built there with proper facilities at hand. It may have been a novelty living down there in the 1970′s in a caravan or wendy house but now its nothing but an eyesore. These residents need to move on.

#3 Many people in Jersey have become rather cynical about Dandara’s relationship with the States.
I think a growing number of us believe there are conflicts of interest
Report abuse
(1) geeky blogger, its afforable to those who live there .
wiil the states find a replacement site for those who want to live like this?
you can hear the nimbys running to put pen to paper right this minute can’t you .
Look at all those NIMBY’s. I do hope you are not listened too, though I can guess the state of the objections… would make for hilarious reading without a shred of credibility.
Will those who live there currently get first choice…..?
Nimbys at it again.
These are more than likely the same idiots in Millionaire estate who wouldn’t let the hill residents use the estate to get out. Remember a few years ago when Ouaisne hill needed to be closed for repairs? These selfish Nimbys wouldn’t let anyone use their estate to get out.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Paul (3). Having joined the bandwagon of outrage, I’ve now had a good look at it and have to say a good job has been done. If I lived in a boat moored off the bay my view would be spoilt, but otherwise it’s no big deal, and I hope that the inhabitants of the new development enjoy their place to live.

Looking at your main picture for this story that yellow caravan looks like it can be towed away at anytime so whats permanent about it?
(11) chris+ tony(4) , towed away to where ??
where is the new trailer park for locals ???
I don’t need to say too much. The record number of objections speaks a thousand words. Don’t let it happen.

Re: 12. Small Money. La Collette incinerator might be an idea.

(14) helix.
if you build it they will come .
nice veiw , sun rise / sunset .
and fresh air, always windy , a bit dusty, but hey ho , the compost heap that no other parish wants is a bit smelly.
who cares about the fallout from the chimney.
i would be happy to live on rozel campsite in a static , if it made for cheap/ cozy living.

14; bit of an insensitive comment bearing in mind the heritage of many romany folk and the persecution which they suffered in occupied european territories. You were trying to be funny but it doesn’t really sound clever.

6. Small Money
Why should the States be obliged to find these people housing? Yet more of my hard earned money going to people who don’t deserve it. Just because thay have lived, extrememly cheaply for many years, and now have to move on, why should the States have to house them? I’m sure that over the years they have all saved alot more money than most of us on rent etc, so they can now afford to rent/buy a decent flat with running water etc, which will be a huge step up than they are used to. Why do I have to pay for them?
Anyone know who the investors are in Dandara, as their website with hold this information !!!! wonder why?
I am sorry but the more these squatters carry on protesting the more stupid they are looking.
I suspect that the shareholders in Dandara are the founder and various senior managers.

It’s just a class thing. People with money and people with no imagination who can’t bear the fact that some others have free spirits and don’t feel the need to follow. It’s lovely down there. If you walk around and chat to some of the people they are very proud of what they have achieved. I bet most of those who post silly comments here either don’t know what they’re talking about, are jealous, or both.
What a load of boring, unimaginative, self centred moaning nimbys you all are. Let these people just get on with their lifestyles, you sad little whingers. Go and live in your magnolia houses and twitch your net curtains at something else.

526 Objections. The sheer number of voices of dissent speaks enough in itself.
My friend lived there for a bit. She was happy and I found the site always a pleasure to stole through.
I think there should be more of this type of living. It adds diversity. Frequently the developments going up in Jersey over the last decade lack soul and character.
This site has plenty of that. Don’t get rid of it.
Re: Monty 21. In that case as it’s lovely around St Ouen by the coast I think I will go down there and build a hut for myself with my ‘free spirit’.
You cannot legally do so Dave (number 21), because you wouldn’t be able to get development permission. I don’t know if you are trying to be clever or if you are merely not aware of the relevant legal requirements.
Ask the planning department for guidance if your suggestion is serious. They are usually very helpful on such matters.
The caravans, on the other hand, constitute an established usage which pre-dates the relevant statute. I hope that this clarifies the matter for you.
norman conquest(17) imho they should take to common land .
not everyone wants to live in a flat.
also you will find youself paying to house people in the not too distant futre of little old jersey.
harry (19) they are not squatters yet, they have a lease.
the island allows the construction of overpriced homes , and creates nothing much for the small person other than a life time of renting , which towards the end of that life will be funded by the taxpayer.
dave at 25, no. You would not get permission. The caravans are legally where they are. You seem to have missed the point my friend. Nice place at the Ouaisne farm. There’s a waiting list for the caravans and a record number of objectors can’t be wrong, I don’t think.
Dave at 25, if you’re a bit of a free spirit as you allege then perhaps you should get in the queue to buy a caravan down there instead of making childish remarks.
If there is a queue to get a caravan down this site then the caravans are worth more money than just the land they rent. Ern (29) are you telling us something thats been missing from this story all along?
It’s a real community down there. It would be great if another one were to be created, maybe with sheds or similar somewhere else. It is so good to see this sort of diversity and creativity in an island which is fast losing its soul. It should be celebrated and protected, not crushed at the whim of some capitalist and his patsy advisers. We don’t want loads of bland “middle england” type houses there or indeed any houses!
