Bar attack with bat ends in jail
Monday 22nd August 2011, 3:00PM BST.
A FATHER of three returned to a bar and attacked a man with a baseball bat who had earlier asked him to tone down his language.
The victim was struck with such force that he was left in a pool of blood on the floor.
Ronald Carl Brinne Hinds (51) was jailed for 18 months by the Royal Court on Friday following the unprovoked attack.
He hit the man in the stomach causing him to drop to his knees before delivering a blow to the back of his head, the court heard.

18 months!!!! Where is the justice in all this … that was GBH he should have got at least 5 years and attend anger management…. that sentence is a joke…he will out in 12 month…
Report abuse
18 Months ???
why do we give such easy sentances to thugs – we cry out over fatal stabbings one week – yet a week later give a slap on the wrist to what could have been easily have been murder ! – this thug had no idea what effects a baseball bat to the head would do – he should have got 6-7 years for his actions – we need to stamp out this culture of violence
Report abuse
What a coward – has a dispute, then goes home to come back with a weapon ! – seems to be totally premeditated – should have been locked up for much longer – who wants these scumbags on the streets ?
I have had to double check my favourites links lately to make sure i was reading thisisjersey.com and not Thisisthebronx.com
Report abuse
Sounds like a nutter, and a coward to boot as he needed to go home and get his bat to attack the unarmed man. 18 months seems far too lenient – hit him twice, and blatantly was not a sporadic action but premeditated…perhaps his lawyer argued that it was “out of character” and that he was “not really responsible for his actions due to alcohol consumption”
Welcome to the Big Society, one big happy community.
Unprovoked, and a blow to the back of the head – only 18 months?!?!
Right, I’m off to settle some grievances! At least I can see my way through the rest of this economic downturn with food & board covered by the few of you who still have jobs!
18 months for going home, picking up a baseball bat, attacking someone, hitting them on the back of the head with said bat when they are down following minimal, if any, provocation. And with a history of violent offences. Does anyone else think 10 years would have been about right? And what are our supine States members doing about the judiciary’s ridiculous approach to sentencing?
Don’t forget folks, Jersey is one of the safest places in the western world! LOL
Report abuse
This does sound rather lenient. Could the Attorney-General refer this case to the Court of Appeal if it feels that this was an unduly lenient sentence? The Appeal Court might then increase it if it agrees…
Report abuse
Why did nobody in the pub grab the bat off him and give him a good seeing to? Where was the big society when it was needed?
A young lawyer clubbed a complete stranger with a wine bottle and received 240 hours of community service and paid £500 of compensation to the victim.
http://www.thisisjersey.com/2008/04/14/no-jail-for-lawyer-in-bottle-assault/
In Donald Pond’s normal world view he should have got a year or two but that would have ruined his ‘career’, fortunately for him he was an upper class thug!
And they say that Jersey is one of the safest places! Its safer in NY… 3 strikes and they are out… certainly has made NY city a safer place to walk round late at night than St Helier. The Magistrate should be ashamed of himself!
Also the JEP mentioned the 17 previous assault charges! Sould have been 4 years minimum. He’s had 17 precious occurrences from which to learn, if he was so inclined. He has proven he cant be anything but. Threat to society, so remove him from it! It’s time sentences on this Island were truly a deterrent, but given the grief the judiciary got in the UK for trying to take a stand on the rioters and looters, you can see why they probably fear criticism for being too tough!
#11 Jodie – it was no Magistrate, it was none other than our esteemed Bailiff! When we have the head of the Islands judiciary handing out soft sentences that do nothing to deter violence, then we can all give up hope of ridding Jersey of it’s high rate of drink fuelled violence.
APRIL 1st????????????
This certainly seems to be very lenient, for a premeditated act, using a weapon that could have lead to a death.
There have been precedents in the last few years of people getting 3 years for retaliating and giving someone a spur of the moment kicking.
So Possession of an Offensive Weapon, Grave and Criminal Assault plus Disorderly on Licensed Premises and he gets 18 months. Presumably the attempted murder could not be put as there would have to be direct evidence that he intended that crime. If so, what, 20 months?
As rightly said by many, this is a clear example of Jersey having the ability to show we are serious on crime and hand out a stiff sentence so that he, and others, will think (you’d hope) before doing the same. Sadly, the Royal Court have let the victim, the police and the people of Jersey down. Hang your heads in shame.
absolutely too short a sentence, kids or not.
Stories like these are more of a concern than the six stabbings. Those deaths were apparently the tragic result of a domestic, this mindless baseball attack is an awful reflection on everyday Jersey life.
We need to deter people from horrendous acts of violence, and 18 months is not enough. The judge will say that he has children, and therefore this disrupts their family unit, but not enough thought is given to the victims
Report abuse
i just cannot believe 18 months, what a joke.
can the case not be referred top court of appeal
for a longer sentence. what kind of message does this send out- and yes last week it was said jersey the safest place in the western world. i have family in jersey and have been coming to the beautiful island for about 30 years. i still love it, but what a decline over recent years. save jersey frim itself before it too late please.
Perhaps 18 months and a taste of his own medicine is more appropriate.
I hate the way “disrupting the family unit” is used as an arguement. He should think of these things before potentially disrupting someone else´s family unit by murdering a member of it.
Did anyone else read the full story in the jep? This guy, just to top it all, is on LONG TERM INCAPACITY BENEFITS. What the hell is this island coming to? I am paying taxes for him to go on the lash and beat the crap out of people, there is something seriously wrong over here now! Jersey used to be a nice place but there are too many scroungers and scumbags that fiddle the benefits system and maybe even just due to boredom commit these crimes. If they had to get off their asses and go to work like the rest of us maybe they wouldn’t bother with such sickening entertainment for themselves.
what a big joke this island has become.
Why not advertise Jersey like this , ” Jersey, The warmest place in the british isles, sunny beaches, zero responsibility for your crimes, tom dick and harry welcome. no purpose necessary or jobs applications required. Come and take a piece of our island… we dont care, so why should you? ”
Sounds about right. That bat to the head could have caused that man brain damage. Surely if this criminal has had 17 previous convictions, then he CLEARLY hasnt learnt? Wow i think i could be a baliff if i can see that and he cant!
Tougher sentencing, tougher punishments, ..and they say crime doesnt pay?! BALIFF!!! SORT IT OUT
Report abuse
Can’t believe this sentence. WHAT IS WRONG WITH OUR COURT SYSTEM!!!! He hit him on the head!
I hope the victim makes his case heard in Court of Appeal and claims his Human Rights re Justice. Surely he can ask for a longer sentence as this is a repeat offender and it was an attempt to kill him, and sue this man to the hilt and the Courts for a laughable sentence. He will do this again, next time he will kill !
If this is guy is 51yrs, his so called kids must be in their 20′s and 30′s not so much kids is it !!! more like Grand-dad!
Makes me wonder what sentence the Polish guy will get !~!~!
States members wake up and see the anger is here in Jersey re lack of jobs/housing at affordable costs/ and increase in food prices etc, as people are losing “the plot” re frustration, so much worry, they snap at the slightest comment!
Help is not at hand, as no-one cares about the those who live hand to mouth.
Can I go out and snack one or two of our States Members, as I am not happy with the way things are going? Will I get an 18month sentence, (or less as it is only a smack)? Tell you what the way I feel with things that are going on with Jersey, it will be worth it, and make me feel better !!!
Better go can feel my blood starting to boil over this. ^ ^

What a joke – no wonder Jersey is falling apart with a justice system and Baliff who are so out of touch with what the population wants – this thug should be given 5+ years – and maybe (just) other scumbags would think twice – if we keep handing out such petty offences we are almost classifying the atack as trivial
Report abuse
I am sick of seeing the results of such mindless violence. And the worst thing is seeing the courts hand out such petty sentances, it is by the grace of God, or good luck, that the victim did not die – shame on you Baliff, you have let Jersey down with this slap on the wrist !
“The big society in action” is precisely what the victim was trying to do here. Asking a drunk to tone down his laguage and stop abusing staff is the sort of socially responsible behaviour we should be encouraging.
Frankly, I’d like to know why this charge wasn’t attempted murder. Hitting someone on the back of the head with a baseball bat is on a par with stabbing in my book. Given the aggravating factors: drunk, the fact the victim was being a good samaritan, the predeterminaton in going home to get tooled up, a long record of violence, I cannot understand the sentence.
As Pond says, where are the States members that will fight this? Le Marquand and Bailhache presided over this pathetic approach to sentencing. Rose Colley was a LibDem in the UK. WHERE ARE THE CANDIDATES WHO WILL MAKE THE STREETS SAFE?
Think outside the box – none of you have any idea what happened that night and there is always two sides to every story!! No one is thinking about his poor family his wife and kids! As for his history this dates back to when he was a kid. I think most of us have regretts from when we where kids. Do you think its fair to be judged on how you acted 25-30 years ago??
Great point from Cape Town Girl – our courts are a laugh.
I think you should all take into consideration what possibley may have happend before this he may be in the wrong but no one will ever know the truth about what happend in the bar half of the people that commented on this are scroungers and have nothing better to do but to write about someone that has done something.
There are many other incidents in the papers that you see and people get little punishments like community service and probation if you read further on in the same paper a little 21 year old slashsed his wrists preety much held his gf and friend hostage and continued to slah his wrists caused £15,000 damage and nearly killed an elderly couple with his car yet he gets 200 hours community service another one that was not working but that was fair wasen’t guys fair play read into it and have a further loook.
Also 2 other men broke into a house and stole money etc and held a knife to someones throat and yet they also get probation and community service look into it before you make silly comments but totally agree with sorting out the benefits system as I know numerous people that are scrounging and my family are hard working and we pay for them we should pull together and sort all of them out and get them to go and work SORT IT OUT THE STATES.
The fact that he went home to get the bat should make it even worse. It s not like he grabbed a pool queue in the action, it was premeditated.
Seriously? Who the heck do our public servants represent? Not the public clearly!
roger phlegm- time you stood for election!!
I don’t have much more to add to the previous excellent comments and just wish to acknowledge my agreement. The person assaulted in this incident will be effected (if not physically, then definitely mentally) for the rest of their life and the perpetrator gets 18 months (if that). It’s a joke.

I have the misfortune to know Hinds, having gone to school with him and nothing has changed with him since then. His past has been full of violence, drink and associated social problems.
The fact that he carried out such an attack is no surprise, but the sentence is bizarre given Hinds past. The future will certainly see this person back on the streets, incapable of rehabiliation and worse will happen next time. That is almost certain.
jersey.bean if you had the facts you would be aware that Hinds has not been in trouble with the Police for over 20 years so before making silly comments get the facts correct.
OK you know Mr Hinds jersey.bean considering you know him do you know when he last commited an offence and why did he do it do we know the full story. Do you know when he was last in trouble look into the facts before writing and hiding behind a nickname. This was an attack that is bad but you cant judge someone on the past he has not been in trouble with the police in over 20 years grow up he will not be on the streets he has a family and he will be back in the house so not on the streets clever man that thinks he knows it all.
so if he grabbed a pool que it would be fine good one
will remember that someone hits someone over the head with a pool que its fine it was there so its ok

#11 Pip Clement: “fortunately for him he was an upper class thug”
This isn’t the case at all. Throwing people in the slammer for 5 years isn’t a solution for everything.
In the case you’re talking about, the individual got far too drunk, walked out with a wine bottle and used what was at hand in a random attack. He already lost his job and has a permanent criminal record. Why put him in the slammer at the taxpayer’s expense if he is genuinely remorseful and is going to be at a disadvantage for the rest of his life as a result of the conviction?
The purpose of prison is to get people back on the rails, not necessarily to punish. If the lesson had been learnt, let the guy continue with his life as best he can and try to turn things around.
It’s completely different to the case in the above article where the guy’s gone home, picked up a weapon and beaten a guy mercilessly. One is a blind moment of drunken stupidity getting into a rage and lashing out with whatever was at hand, the other is a premeditated brutal attack.
I think that the correct decision was made in the Conway case, but the 18 months for Hinds was too lenient.
I don’t care if it was his first offence in 20 years. If I see someone behaving badly and I ask them to behave themselves then if I am attacked I believe the state has a duty to defend me. In this case that means punishing the violent thug for a long time – I would say 10 years in prison for this offence.
If Mr Hinds valued his wife and children then perhaps he would act by example rather than claiming incapacity benefit when apparently healthy and getting steaming drunk and attacking people like a coward.
No need to judge on the past, judge on how he has acted in this case. Then lock him up and throw away the key.
However, in my view anyone who commits 3 violent offences should be jailed for a minimum of 10 years. Simple as that. Because my priority is protecting the innocent from random violence, not protecting the “nice bloke” who periodically flips and attacks people with bats.

“The purpose of prison is to get people back on the rails, not necessarily to punish. If the lesson had been learnt, let the guy continue with his life as best he can and try to turn things around”
It’s Liberals like you, with their PC garbage that’s responsible for the lack of discipline we have!
Once again we come back to the victims in these crimes, it appears some people are more concerned about the thugs
Report abuse
its not completely different the bloke had a bottle and used it so he should not of got away with a minimal slap on the wrist he has still used a bottle that can cause much more damage than a bat.
Both attacks are different but they have both done the same thing and 2 completely different sentences get a grip and stop sticking up for people that you believe to be upper class and look at the bigger picture we are all equal and they both should have faced the same punishment.
One rule for one and another for the next!!
The sentence was rather lenient given this particular gent’s antecedence. It will surely serve as no deterrent for similar behaviour and rehabilitation is unlikely.
Roger where you the one that got attacked if so then fair enough make those comments if not i believe you should keep quiet if you dont know the full story.
Lock him up and throw away the key get a grip rapist’s and peadophiles get out so we should lock them up and throw away the key not on someone that has not committed an offence in twenty years and by the sounds of it from the article in the paper has been a caring and loving father and husband get a grip mate.
I’m not sure that determining the severity of the crime by the implements used is particularly useful – you can kill somebody with your bare hands if you want to. And I’m not sure you should underestimate the damage that a baseball bat can do either.
On a slightly different matter, I’ve never understood people who constantly rank the validity of a service in proportion with how much it’s costing them as a tax-payer. Would you rather pay less tax and have more criminals at large, or pay more tax and have more of them behind bars? I’d take the latter personally. Also, surely the point of prison IS to punish people and in doing do strongly discourage them from reoffending. Surely going to prison has to be an unpleasant and distinct possibility for those tempted to commit crimes, otherwise people would go around doing what the hell they like. I’m all for stronger sentencing, especially for violent crime.
