We need people of integrity who love and care for the Island

Monday 22nd August 2011, 3:00PM BST.

From Len Vautier.
LETTERS are starting to appear concerning the forthcoming elections. I would like to express my feelings.

It was good news too to hear that Senator Cohen would not be standing again. He has done more damage to our Island than anyone I can ever remember. I feel sure he would not have been re-elected and he knows it.

I am only sorry that Senator Ozouf is not up for re-election as he too, I am sure, would not have been re-elected. However, it is possible that he will be Chief Minister.

It will be a dreadful mistake, he has always had one policy, ‘rob the poor to pay the rich’, and his policy will never alter.

I would hope he heads no committee, he is too dangerous, but he would possibly make a good back bencher.

What we need in our States is people of integrity, people who may or may not be Jersey born, but who love and care for our Island.

Most of all we need common sense, so sadly lacking at present – it is needed more than highly educated people. No person knows everything, and the States do have qualified personnel in every field to turn to for advice.

Finally, I would like to see more candidates for Chief Minister. My choice would be Deputy Ian Gorst and Senator Ben Shenton, both with the qualifications I have mentioned.

I am inclined to agree about the comments about Senator Ozouf. According to another part of this web site he is reported to have said during the last election “I will robustly oppose any attempt to increase GST above 3%.” I think we are all quite aware of how he kept to his word on that one.

There was also another promise reportedly made by the senators who were elected last time “Agreement to step down in four years to help the Island move to a general election (commitment given at Trinity parish hustings).”

Does anyone think that one is likely to be honoured next year?

Len, I was ticking all the boxes as I read your letter.
Then you mention Deputy Gorst who’s Social Security Dept decided they did not need the extra 2% from high earners as they had plenty of money. Then promptly put up SS for everybody from 2013.
Senator Ben Shenton does not have enough Ministerial experience and by many an account is often out of the Chamber. A great shame his father Dick is not 20 years younger!

Think we should hold a “You can be elected for The States” Competition. Channel TV and Local Radio stations can interview “The Joe/Joanne Publics” who want to stand can, no quals needed, then we all vote for the one we want. Therefore a Real Person who works hard to survive can be For the People, Voted from The People !
Think I might stand, do you think they will take a Woman? (with 2 kids/dogs/no car/don’t claim any benefits/on a low income, BUT honest)
