Panel to look at cost of police station move failure

Wednesday 24th August 2011, 2:57PM BST.

THE potential savings lost by the States’ failure to seal the new police station site will be reviewed by a panel of politicians.

Delays in the £20m project to move the police station to the empty office building on the Green Street roundabout have allowed a finance firm to snatch the site from under the States’ noses.

And it is feared that the missed opportunity will mean that savings in public spending outlined in both the Comprehensive Spending Review and the States office rationalisation programme could be lost.

The review by the Corporate Services Scrutiny panel will focus on the cost of the 18-month project’s failure and how it fell apart.

I presume that arrangements will now be made for the States to have a sub-lease from the new lessees. Any bets?

For goodness sake don’t commission uk consultants to assess the cost of this failure. Move on. Spend the time and effort sorting out another site, if it is required.

so look to converting the old jersey college for girls if its still in public ownership big parking area, loads of space, why not?
employ local contractors to refurb the place , i am sure they could do with the work, and spend money at the local building material suppliers , hopefully no more lamps for £6000.

Closing the door after the horse has bolted. The States don’t need another pointless talking shop. The authorites need to look at the future and not dwell on the recent past. The faux pas has occurred, now lets move on and look at the hear and now.

Is there no end to the incompetence of our states departments? Are any of the departments fit for purpose? Due to the incompetence of the income tax department who can’t even calculate the monthly ITIS deduction correctly, last year I ended up with a very large amount left over at the end of the year despite receiving a letter in November 2010 advising me they were reducing my monthly payment rate by 1%. I am now having to make up the difference by paying 25% this year. When I finally managed to speak to the tax office the person just said “oh it’s the computer it can’t calculate the correct % figure” !! Also when i ordered a statement i found that they had not allocated two month payments and tried to blame it on my employers which was incorrect and after looking to it they had to admit it was their error. I know I would have had the pay the money anyway but 25% when you haven’t budgeted for it and also haven’t had a pay rise either is a big hit on my monthly salary. I would strongly recommend everyone to request a statement at the end of each year to ensure that they have had 12 months payments allocated against their bill.

That site has been empty for years. And typical of the States to close the stable door after the horse has bolted. Sorry no sympathy, just glad the taxpayer has been saved from more expense then was needed.

This proposed public enquiry is pointless. It is simply a time-wasting political witch-hunt which serves the tax-payer no real benefit whatsoever. There are more important things which need to be “scrutinised”. There are plenty of other viable/more sensible options which can be used by the States to re-house the police – and which are already owned by the States.

michael(6) its a guess with itis ( well it is for me) when you do a bit of overtime , last year i ended up with a bill, luckily i had funds to draw on.
correct the tax department have no idea when they lump you with 25%, and your earnings have dropped or become non existant .
guernsey had it right , started again from zero, and have tax in real time , not a year behind, p a y e way to go know where you are .
ive tried to work less this year , so as to avoid , the excess charge because this year there is no cash to cover any short fall.

    hahaha…..”snatched” from under their noses???

As no.7 says, this site has been embarassingly empty for years.

…besides, can someone tell me where all the police vehicles would be parked….and near a busy roundabout which does not make sense to me (especially in emergencies).

Also, where would the fire brigade re-locate to….or do they stay at Rouge Bouillon?

Maybe they could build a new station at Snow Hill instead……the car park between Snow Hill and the Route du Fort roundabout….now that would be a central location and may help to make St Helier a safer place to be!
