Youthful Jersey side for Malaysia

Wednesday 24th August 2011, 3:00PM BST.

Peter Gough (batting) will captain the team

IT IS a young Jersey side that will carry hopes of promotion into next month’s Division VI World Cricket League encounter in Kuala Lumpur.

The Island team has today been named by the Jersey Cricket Board and a total of 14 players, plus manager Chris Minty, coach Craig Hogan and sports therapist Jason Carpenter will make the trip to Malaysia on 10 September.

Just six players remain from the Division V squad who suffered relegation in Nepal last year, including Peter Gough, who takes up the captaincy, and Dean Morrison who, as reported earlier, has rerouted his travel plans to play for the side.

Get P.Connolly in the side I watched him play he is very good and should be in your team all the time I have seen him in the last tournament even though he played minimal games.

Jersey really need to sort the selection process same faces and same people try new things.

Give me some instances of Saturday cricket performances this year that show PC has taken big hauls in matches? He is one for the future and does have a great attitude but selections need to be warranted always.

Jersey need to sort the selection process out….what da? I think if you knew much about the game you can see they are trying to do different thngs. Pure fact is that it is a small island and some of the players coming through are point blank not good enough! FACT

This is plain obvious after the retirement of several Jersey cricket talismen since the Wcl 4 days in Tanzania. You can’t replace class and experience which is evident at the present time.

Its a rebuilding process. Happens to every team. Just look at Australia when you lose several experienced players at the same time. New players have to be given their opportunity and have to be given time to bed in and find their feet, otherwise you just end up discarding players too soon. For some, Malaysia may well be a year or two too soon, but for those it will be great experience. Others will surprise us and thrive at that level sooner than many would forecast.

Its a big shame that several experienced players have made themselves unavailable. One or two have very good reasons which anyone would sympathise with. Others just don’t want to be there, so why take them? If they can’t be bothered then they won’t be missed. Better to have 14 triers than to have 9 or 10 triers and 4 or 5 very reluctant tourists who would rather not be there.

Survival in Division 6 would be a very decent result. We can then consolidate and be stronger for it. Promotion would be a huge bonus (I gather Division 5 is in Singapore in February/March). Relegation would be a big disappointment as it would having gone from Division 4 to Division 7 in a short space of time, but if that happens then we’ll just have to face it and get on with it.

We’ve got some decent youngsters with lots of potential and a very good coach so who knows? Finishing above Guernsey would be great of course but they look a fair bit stronger at the moment. If we take a 2 or 3-year view then we’ll be fine. Short-termism is not what we need at the moment.

Connolys a good player as is Alex Cooke and Dan Garton, i think everyones losing sight of the fact that for once Jersey is able to pick exceptionally good local born players. Being one or two years young is a nonsense all three have been playing age group international cricket from a young age and are more than capable, i doubt the level of play will be the issue for all but more the heat.

As for questioning their ability that is a nonsense too, ive had the pleasure of playing with Garton and Cooke this season and against Connoly. Currently Garton is top of the handicap for most runs and in his last 2 games has spent 90 overs at the crease, cooke was last years winner of the handicap and connoly has already this season played senior international cricket with jersey. All have also spent a stupid amount of time in the nets to get to this level

These 3 youngsters have great skill a fantastic attitude to the game and will play their best and more in Malaysia. And we should not lose sight of the fact, that the sport in the island is underfunded has a severe lack of top class facilities and that near on all the state schools dont have cricket programmes this is a fantastic achievement for all.

Cricket in Jersey is underfunded with a severe lack of top class facilities? Really? Circa US$300k a year from ICC, plus corporate sponsorship, a full-time overseas national coach, several full-time and part-time development/administrative staff plus some excellent grounds which many ICC member countries of a far higher ranking would be extremely envious, with those grounds owned and maintained by States of Jersey doesn’t sound like underfunding to me.
Grainville, FB Fields, Farmers Field, Les Quennenvais and Victoria College are outstanding grass wicket facilities even if the square at Grainville now desperately needs to be relayed and Victoria College has gone downhill this year.
Seriously, where do those facilities and the funding levels fall short? What would Jersey cricket realistically spend any extra funding on without wasting it on non-essentials?

I am not slagging the team at all. The young players need to come through and be given an opportunity, but this is a very inexperienced side and it is impossible to replace the likes of Driver, Hague, Carlyon brothers, Jones. The youth in the team will try their best and will need to STAND up in this tournament. I hope they do very well, but junior cricket and even Sat Premier cricket for that matter are miles and miles away from the standard of international stuff.

Unfortunately Jersey cricket needs a complete restructure. They had the world at their feet after World League 5 in Jersey, but because of poor management this is just a distant memory. There is clearly one faction that controls the cricket on the Island and until this is less important than actually representing Jersey, Jersey cricket will make little, if not no progress. This is already in motion with the relegation from the last 2 World Leagues. The weight behind one club is the in-balance which is crippling Jersey cricket at the moment and with so many influential parties involved with this club, things are looking grim for the future. This is a really shame as the Island has so much to offer. The cricket board need more independent bodies, preferably from off island as the politics is ridiculous. Too narrow minded and controlling, when they should actually be embracing change and progression. The youth cricket is a complete joke, particularly when it comes to Island representative teams. Too much weight on the honor of representing their school, if the same time and pride was channelled into representing their Country, I do not think Jersey cricket would be in the mess they are in. Unfortunately, Jersey cricket are using some very cheap filler to cover over the huge cracks there are in their ethos. Until the top is right, Jersey cricket will continue down the slippery slope of embarrassment that is already happening.

Totally agree JC 17,especially on the youth Cricket squads,it seems that if you have spent a few hours on a bowling machine at the college prep you are instantly qualified to wear the island cricket cap and you will have a 20% chance of being captain or vice captain as none of these junior sides is ever led by a non College boy.It is Sporting apparteid. We are now reaping what has been sown, the old school clique running Island Cricket should be ashamed of how they have allowed their self serving mediocre bland style of college Cricket to become representitive of the Island game.

Yesterday’s inter-insular performance was absolutely woeful. It was like men against boys and most of our boys were totally out of their depth. Only Ben Stevens and to an extent Peter Gough come out with any credit.

We are going into a high standard of tournament in Malaysia with just three batsmen good enough to bat in the top order at this level (Gough, Morrison, Farley) although de la Haye does have the potential to do well. Stevens and Kay should be batting at 7 and 8 not at 3 and 6. Stevens is our only bowler good enough at this level. Kay was truly awful yesterday. Why do we not have any decent bowlers who can bowl line and length?

We have to be realistic and expect to be relegated from Division 6 in Malaysia and also hope that Division 7 doesn’t come around too soon otherwise we will disappear down to Division 8. Guernsey are currently a very strong side and its no disgrace to lose to them (I doubt if our strongest side would have been enough yesterday) but forget about guernsey for a minute. The Jersey team is rapidly going backwards and we have to ask how on earth we could be facing three successive relegations. We don’t appear to have prepared for the inevitable loss of our older players and are likely to lose Morrison after Malaysia if he doesnt come back to live here. We can’t keep relying on imports like Driver, Morrison and Hague. We’ve got to start producing more local players through the local system and some serious questions have to be asked about how we will achieve that. Some posters above have already posed the questions about the Victoria College and OVs influence. Until we change that we are not going to make any progress.

If you look back over the past 5 years when the Jersey side has been strong, its evident that nearly all of our best players did NOT go to Victoria College. So why is so much effort focused on College cricket when so many of them are either not good enough, give up or go off to university and don’t come back. Its a complete waste of money.

Driver, Kay, Stevens and Farley all went to school in England. Morrison and Hague came from Australia. Patidar came from the UK. The two Carlyons didn’t go to Victoria College. Only Peter Gough of our outstanding players went to Victoria College. The team though has been full of mediocre College boys who just haven’t done the business.

Saturday’s result proved what I was being REALISTIC about with my comments :) The young players coming through are just NOT good enough and I know this because I play the game and have played it to a high standard.

I agree with all the comments by Jerseyman Cricketer, Red Squirrel, Jimmy, Truthman and Frustrated about the shake up required in Jersey Cricket, but this cannot and will not happen unless the people get together and oust the current regime. That is the only way it will happen. People need to vote with their feet at the next annual JCB meeting.

Jersey cricket need to follow a similar model to Jersey Rugby by going out and getting corporate sponsorship, even if cricket is harder to market than a rugby match. Jersey cricket need more money to progress the game on the island and get a proper infrastructure and business plan in place. The current ICC money gets eaten up quickly with ALL the tournaments from U15 to the senior team, wages of the CEO, Coach and the other few current VIC college boy coaches who are useless as they have never played the game to a high standard!

If nothing is done at the next JCB AGM then you can expect the status quo to remain for next season and the forseeable future. Guernsey cricket is definitely on the up because they have the right business model and have the right people involved (even if they also only make ends just meet on the finance side of things).

Because if all the better players are condensed into one team then by definition on a small island the opposition are weaker. The better players aren’t then being tested each week because the best bowlers are not facing the best batsmen. Yes, that means that OVs should win the domestic league hands-down, but how could that possibly be preparing them for playing against better opposition? I think Guernsey had exactly the same problem with Cobo having 8 or 9 of their island side for several years and its only in the past 2 or 3 years when that state of affairs has been broken.
Maybe the island coach should be strongly advising young players not to be joining OVs so that they can prove themselves elsewhere, but the system seems to make it very difficult for College players to play for anyone else. Therein lies a huge part of the problem.

It does not help when the young lads at College are put under huge pressure to represnt OVs and remain exclusive to that community. From what I have been told their prefect rights will be taken away if they do not play exclusivley for the school. Also a couple of lads have been told it would be the best for their development by their coach/manager. Personally dont see that logic, surely they should be striving to play against the best, instead of be wrapped up in cotton wool all the time. Lets face it, Jersey cricket is going no where, as it has been for years, they have been forunate with the quality of exports, who have basically carried the team. Everyone knows what needs to happen, but until representing Jersey is the main honour look out for Jersey in WCL Div 9 in Alaska in 2014. Guernsey are leapfrogging us which is the most annoying aspect of this process, they seem to want to go places!!!!! Where has our pride gone?????? Not so much so the players but more the management!

I think we need to take a deep breath and look rationally at the situation.

I travelled to Guernsey on Saturday and was as disappointed as my fellow travellers to watch the performance. My own view as a traditionalist is that the Inter Insular is an opportunity for anyone who has performed in the current season in domestic cricket to represent the Island whether or not they are ICC tournament eligible. However 2011 provides an unusual set of timings with WCL6 taking place shortly after and so the selectors took the view as did Guernsey’s that the match should be used as a warm up.Unfortunately this ruled out more experienced Jersey players than Guernsey.

The major reasons as to why people can’t travel to Malaysia are the amount of time required off work but also the types of work people do. It must be remembered that 3 of Jersey’s more experienced cricketers-Driver,Jones and Dewhurst are teachers and are now in term and unable to get time off.Compare this to Guernsey where Frith,Savident,Le Prevost and Ravenscroft are directly employed within cricket in Guernsey or UK and Nussbaumer works in the family business so predictably making it easier for Guernsey’s key players to have time off.I’m not sure how it works for other sports but maybe Jersey’s employers need to be more tolerant in allowing time off to represent the Island.

As for the anti OV comments well this is just history repeating itself…in the 1970s and early 80s the same comments were directed at Springfield, 80s into 90s Ceasereans and 90s into 00s at Sporting Club. Sporting success in a small community tends to be cyclical- i don’t remember too much sympathy shown to myself and 8 other OVS (9players) when we were on the wrong end of a 365 opening partnership just a few years ago….as i said generally these things are cyclical.

We can all debate until the cows come home but its a bit like the States….if you want to change things put yourself invest some of your own time in getting involved in cricket coaching and administration and bring your ideas to the table.

Probably not something you get told very often but you’ve spoken quite a lot of sense there.
I understand that Guernsey had a maximum of two players who were effectively ruled out because of the pre-Malaysia selection policy. I think Jersey would have probably had five who would almost certainly have been picked (Driver, Jones, Carlyon, Dewhurst, J Gough).

Re. players getting time off work, its definitely a factor and its fair to say that with so many teachers involved its down to luck whether they are available or not. They get a lot of holidays but if the tournaments don’t fall within those holiday periods then you can understand that its going to be hard to get extra time off in termtime.

Club-wise, any dominant side for a sustained period of time is there to be shot down. Its fashionable to criticise a dominant team in any sport. However, where Jersey cricket is concerned its beginning to look very unhealthy and if there is any element of truth in some of the allegations made by some other posters on this thread, then something has to be done. It is an undeniable fact that a disproportionate amount of coaching resource goes into coaching at Victoria College, yet the drop-out rate of players from their 1st XI in the following 5-7 years is massive, mainly because so many of them go to university and don’t come back (and/or just give up playing). The reality is that a strong Victoria College 1st XI these days does NOT mean a strong Jersey cricket team. The focus has to be much broader as its the cricketers who do not go to university who are likely to be here into their late 20s and early 30s when they should be peaking. Its basic demographics, but nobody seems to be reacting to those democratics when the need for change is staring us in the face.

How can the JCB’s CEO possibly also run Victoria College cricket without that being a conflict of interest? He may have done it for many years but is anyone actually challenging that by asking whether its right today? Surely we would benefit from somebody else taking on the College role and the JCB’s CEO using his time to develop cricketers from the other schools? Its not rocket science but why has the status quo been allowed to continue?

well done Andy Brown for actually putting your own name along side your comments and some good views at that.for all the people i name on this article please dont take offence!
To Pete Gough and his team a very big well done on your treble winning season. There seems to be alot of comments on here about ovs and vic college

Well here on my thoughts on there jersey cricketing career to date.
Pete Gough and Chris Jones have made match winning performances for jersey on a number of occ
    asions,Marks out of 10? i would give them a 8.
Johnny Gough, Sam De La Haye,Tom Minty,Andy Dewhurst(st ouen now)in my opinion have not produced match winning performances for jersey to date,at european, world or inter insula!rs.mark out 10? 6
Then you come to the vic boys currently involved with the senior island,Alex Noel,Alex Cooke,Corey Bisson and A.Mcguire, only time will tell how well there fair in a jersey shirt.Corne Bodenstein
in my opinion when qualified to play for jersey will make a big difference he has tons of ability,
but as you all know he is South African.
My view on the JCB IS MAYBE THEY SHOULD READ A FEW OF THESE COMMENTS AND TAKE NOTE ! we all know jersey cricket needs a big shake up from top to bottom,so like Andy Brown said come to the agm and voice your concerns, dont just hide behind a bogus name.!!

I see the nurturing of a very narrow young talent base and a domestic weekend structure which doesn’t look healthy due to the “forced” distribution of the young College players to OVs. You weren’t an Old Victorian and nor were several of the outstanding players of your era. It should be strongly evident to everyone that far more effort and attention must be paid to those outside the College system but the very opposite seems to be happening.
