Halksworth beats the pain
Wednesday 31st August 2011, 2:59PM BST.
UNFIT, struggling in the warm-up with an Achilles problem and so exhausted from the run that he fell, rather than ran through the finishing line, Dan Halksworth nevertheless won his second consecutive Ogier Jersey Triathlon on Sunday morning.
‘I felt my Achilles go before we’d even started,’ he said after the race. ‘It was continuing to hurt me in the swim and I struggled in the run. That was the first run I’ve done in six weeks and I could tell the difference.
‘My time was slower than last year (1 hr 57.52 compared to 1hr 54.58) but I was just pleased to finish the thing. The swim was longer than usual; the bike course was tough and the run was hard, particularly as Nick (Saunders) is a fantastic runner.
The first woman home was Guernsey’s Gail King.
