Heavy defeat for Jersey in cricket inter-insular
Monday 5th September 2011, 2:10PM BST.

Guernsey beat Jersey by 147 runs
SELDOM has there been such a one-sided inter-insular.
The Sarnians beat Jersey by 147 runs at the KGV on Saturday. The fact that Jersey fell three runs short of matching Jeremy Frith’s individual score alone emphasises just how dominant Guernsey were.
Centurion Frith was the undoubted star of the performance as he collected yet another man-of-the-match award, but the strength in depth of the hosts’ squad was evident whereas, with several big name players absent, the visitors simply asked too much of a very youthful side.
With Guernsey starting proceedings with the bat, after a run out in the first over, credited to James Faudemer for his swift piece of fielding close in on the leg side which led to a direct hit, the wickets were scarce to be seen.
Frith was able to score 147 and help the home side on to 273, for seven, with Ben Stevens the pick of the bowlers on four wickets for 35 runs. Jersey then struggled to put the pieces together with the bat and found themselves quickly down to 41 for three.

Are you for real? The injury happened on the 4th ball of the game – how could P Connolly have been “doing well until that happened?” !!! Granted, he hadn’t done anything wrong but that’s a ridiculous statement. Are you sure you were there?

Get Hogan out?!?!? That is a ridiculous statement. He has done a fantastic job since he has been in the role. He does not get near enough credit for what he done for Jersey Cricket. He puts in an incredible number of hours, not only coaching but also in planning. He is only working with what he has got on the island. He inherited a squad depleted by the retirement of a significant number of senior members of the WCL4 days.
If certain departments of Jersey Cricket were different then this would allow him to put in the structure required to succeed and move up the wcl rankings.

You are spot on! He’s an excellent coach but anything he achieves would be despite the infrastructure around him, not because of it.
The problems do not stem from the coach. He’s doing his best and hasn’t got many tools to do it with. I’d be very surprised if he isn’t seriously questioning whether its all worth it.
The previous island coach was also an outstanding coach. A pattern is beginning to emerge…

I think we need to take a deep breath and look rationally at the situation.
I travelled to Guernsey on Saturday and was as disappointed as my fellow travellers to watch the performance. My own view as a traditionalist is that the Inter Insular is an opportunity for anyone who has performed in the current season in domestic cricket to represent the Island whether or not they are ICC tournament eligible. However 2011 provides an unusual set of timings with WCL6 taking place shortly after and so the selectors took the view as did Guernsey’s that the match should be used as a warm up.Unfortunately this ruled out more experienced Jersey players than Guernsey.
The major reasons as to why people can’t travel to Malaysia are the amount of time required off work but also the types of work people do. It must be remembered that 3 of Jersey’s more experienced cricketers-Driver,Jones and Dewhurst are teachers and are now in term and unable to get time off.Compare this to Guernsey where Frith,Savident,Le Prevost and Ravenscroft are directly employed within cricket in Guernsey or UK and Nussbaumer works in the family business so predictably making it easier for Guernsey’s key players to have time off.I’m not sure how it works for other sports but maybe Jersey’s employers need to be more tolerant in allowing time off to represent the Island.
As for the anti OV comments well this is just history repeating itself…in the 1970s and early 80s the same comments were directed at Springfield, 80s into 90s Ceasereans and 90s into 00s at Sporting Club. Sporting success in a small community tends to be cyclical- i don’t remember too much sympathy shown to myself and 8 other OVS (9players) when we were on the wrong end of a 365 opening partnership just a few years ago….as i said generally these things are cyclical.
We can all debate until the cows come home but its a bit like the States….if you want to change things put yourself invest some of your own time in getting involved in cricket coaching and administration and bring your ideas to the table.

Who was the previous Island coach? If your are talking about yet another one of the JCB’s mistakes in Peter Kirstin then he was not an outstanding coach, he was a shocker! Paid ridiculous money for doing nothing, but at least they could say Jersey had an ex test player as a coach, who was happy to abandon the Jersey team in Tanzania because the team was going to be relegated! I believe he left half way through the Italy game and left the team to their own devices. Don’t worry though the board and him came out smelling of roses and the players were left to out to dry as normal.

What a fantastic day out, the most one sided inter insular in many many years. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and look forward to a similar result next year. Hopefully Condor will put on an early boat so that we don’t have to hang around for too long in crapaud land after we’ve spanked you by mid afternoon.

If you can reach the conclusion that any player was doing well in a period of 4 balls in which he didn’t touch the ball, then you clearky lack all credibility. Thats not a criticism of the player- its a criticism of you in making such a stupid statement.

There are two sides to every story. Have you established WHY he threw his toys out of the pram?
Yeah, the team was loosing and he did not want to be associated with a loosing team. Apparently he was sacked from Western Province in SA for a similar incident and the JCB knew this before they appointed him. Typical.
Not against the lads who are public school, its not their fault. Its the management and advice they are given which is detrimental to their development.
