Sue Coombes and Ken Huish in action

A GROUP of veteran swimmers have become the first to complete the crossing from France to Jersey.

The team of six, who have an average age of 56, dodged huge blooms of jellyfish and navigated strong tidal currents to swim the 20 nautical miles from Anneville-sur-Mer, near Granville in Normandy, to Anne Port.

The relay team challenge began at 8.30 am on Saturday when 58-year-old Dave Le Clercq took to the water. Steve Toudic (56) then took over before 50-year-old Stuart Banks took the plunge.

He was replaced by Neil Faudemer (51) before Sue Coombes (54) and then Ken Huish (68) took over. Each team member swam one leg before four of the group each undertook an extra stage. The challenge finished at 6.42 pm, when Mrs Coombes arrived back at Anne Port escorted by Mr Huish.
