A real hope for political change

Thursday 22nd September 2011, 3:00PM BST.

From Marianne Sunier.
I AM writing in response to the letter written by Don Filleul (JEP, 2 September) regarding Sir Philip Bailhache’s decision to stand as a Senatorial candidate in the forthcoming elections on 19 of October.

I have a great deal of respect and admiration for Mr Filleul and indeed had the privilege of working as a trustee of the Jersey Heritage Trust under his excellent leadership as our chairman.

It is because of this regard that I am saddened that he could be so wrong in his comments regarding Sir Philip Bailhache’s bold and selfless decision to step down from an extremely well paid position as a judge to allow himself to become a candidate for political office and to continue to serve the Island and the Jersey people that Sir Philip so transparently cherishes.

Mr Filleul states that Sir Philip’s ‘competence and ability can be in no doubt’ and also that he ‘cannot understand why one who has already achieved the very peak of status and authority in both Court and States, and acknowledgement by his Queen, would want to expose himself to the farrago of personal and political wrangling which has characterised the recent Assembly’.

Mr Filleul then goes on to highlight the disappointment that he had felt and that retiring Senator Ben Shenton feels, regarding the poor quality of the vast majority of our present States Members who make decision-making tortuous and prolonged as we can all quite clearly see to the point of preventing the States from operating in an intelligent, timely and efficient manner.

This has led to the position that States Members in general are not held in respect or trusted which is a dreadful state of affairs.

This Island should be able to expect such minimum standards of government as intelligent, timely and cost effective decision making derived from factual analysis and mastering of political briefs from its political representatives, whether Senator, Deputy or Constable, and the fact that it can’t shows that we have too many of the wrong people in place and we have to do something to attract the type of people who can provide what the Island requires and attack the political rot from within.

This is why I am delighted that Sir Philip is standing. The fact that he is prepared to sacrifice a position that pays substantially more than a States Member’s ‘salary’, has in his past already served as a Deputy for his parish so is familiar with the work, has presided over the States as Bailiff so has all the knowledge and continuity associated with having had to closely follow States proceedings for the last couple of decades and also has a strong knowledge of the people and subject matters he will be dealing with all culminates as very clear evidence to me that he is totally the right sort of person we want to have in the States to change the culture and in doing so attract other high-quality candidates to come forward for office.

It would seem to my very simplistic mind that as we are currently looking at reform of the States that we could use the undoubted skills, knowledge and expertise of Sir Philip to lead the charge on States reform. Good Lord we wouldn’t even have to bring in legal experts and pay them. As my Nan used to say: ‘Never look a gift horse in the mouth.’

So yes, the State’s current political position is bleak but if we always do what we always did then we will continue with the same outcome. Thankfully the type of candidates like Sir Philip coming forward can start the hard process of changing that picture.

Who knows we may even get to a position in the future where becoming a politician in Jersey is seen as a position to aspire to and be treated with respect. Now wouldn’t that be worth striving for?

There are many who hold the opposite view to the writer of this letter, insofar as they would see Sir Philip as a major obstacle to fair and balanced Government, just look at his stated views on Freedom of Information or his stand against discrimination laws I wonder If Mr Cohen would agree with him after the alleged racist threat’s made against his person?

Yes Marianne I too dream of the day when the whole states membership is full of legends like Sir Philip. Just think how wonderful it would be if his brother joins the ranks in a few years time.

Perhaps we should stop people without such grand stature from wasting our time in seeking election. Maybe we should put some prerequisite requirements like companies do in job adverts?

Must be degree educated and preferably a qualified member of the legal profession. Membership of the OVs association also desirable. If you have held a directorship or been high up in the chamber of commerce thats is also handy. All in all, as long as your incredibly brainy, perhaps wealthy we’re sure your the right people for us.

What’s this? The letter writer is a PR consultant. Does the JEP not have an offical stance on this type of thing in the run up to elections?

    Well spotted @3

I am at a loss to understand why the JEP felt it acceptable to publish a blatant spin for one of the election candidates, composed by a Public Relations professional via its letter pages!

Maybe the fact that her husband who founded the PR company was previously a journalist with the JEP had some bearing on their decision to publish the spin in this manner.

Doubt we’ll get any answer to that. Just watch out for more of the same camouflaged election campaigning from this candidate in the media over the coming weeks.

    Hear, hear Madam!

One welcomes the opportunity to reiterate one’s support for Sir Philip’s campaign to restore the virtues of elitism and deference to their rightful place at the heart of island life.

    ‘Spinme Round’ (Correspondent 3)

You labour under the misapprehension that the mere fact of being a public relations consultant precludes one from expressing one’s deeply held political convictions. Rather one should view her letter as more proof – if it were needed – of Sir Philip’s widespread appeal across the island.

Moreover one does not hesitate to condemn this specious attack on Mrs Sunier’s democratic rights.

Indeed such corrosive cynicism is at the root of the malaise which has afflicted the States Assembly in recent times, one which Sir Philip has so eloquently condemned and pledges to address once elected.

One fondly remembers the days when the States Assembly resembled more a gentleman’s club than a legislative body: where the word of one’s fellow members was trusted implicitly and where to raise awkward questions was positively frowned upon.

And who can deny that such an arrangement served our community far better than the current situation? Where seemingly every ministerial pronouncement is picked over by a disruptive handful of barrack room lawyers. These ‘rotten apples’ are eager, it would appear, to engineer every possible opportunity to air the island’s ‘dirty laundry’ in public and to sully Jersey’s good name.

Such individuals need to learn their place once more and one looks to Sir Philip, once in office, to adminster the salutary lesson.

The JEP is a private firm and dont have to support anyone, however they can choose a person they want without saction unlike the bbc who must remain balanced, So the JEP and openly support who they like even if that person/persons may bve one of the most conflicted of people like Sir Philip Bailhache.

And if you think this man is “Brainy” then that is a serious indictment of Jersey’s people

Boris you are of course quite right. And whilst I have every sympathy with the Editors desire to go with the most’news-worthy’ story of the day there are times when I’ve questioned the real meaning.

Gorst won’t be Chief Minister. It’s not front-page news is it?

Proundjerseyman, I never seen such a brilliant and most eloquent disclosure of the society in which we live. Your’e a genius. I’m selling Proudjerseyman T-shirts at the car boot in St. John next Sunday.

I break even on 12 sales but have a box of 50 so come on down in your Range Rovers?
