Island-wide power cut
Tuesday 27th September 2011, 8:35AM BST.
A power cut hit Jersey, Guernsey and areas of France last night.
Although the cause is still under investigation, it is believed the outage originated in France.
Since the cut – which happened at around 7.20pm and lasted just under an hour – the Island has been generating its own electricity at La Collette.
However, the lack of power did not stop last night’s Senatorial hustings at St Martin’s Public Hall after the Honorary Police came to the rescue with torches and battery-powered lighting.

KIT 4 CLUBS
Win a share of £10,000
2012 is the year of the London Olympics and to celebrate this great event the Jersey Evening Post, in association with sponsors Ogier is giving all sporting clubs a chance to win a share of £10,000.

“Although the cause is still under investigation, it is believed the outage originated in France”.
Well lets bring in a team of UK experts to spend 9 months and hundreds of thousands of pounds finding the cause.
Why does it have to happen just when it’s getting dark, can Frenchie please schedule their power failures to fall during daylight hours. The missus wanted to talk since she couldn’t watch Corrie, talk I haven’t spoken to her in years. I went down the shed with a candle and a gallon of scrumpy.

I am sorry but is a half hour power cut actually news?

Does anyone else feel let down by the radio over here? Basic questions we all want to know -
1) How much of the island is affected?
2) What caused it?
3) How long before power comes back?
Those of us with battery powered radios tuned into the local stations and were rewarded with no helpful information whatsoever! Very poor show in this day and age.

Anything that doesn’t involve investigative journalism is news to this crowd!

its the massive solar flares, this is just the start! and my sources tell me the power is still out.
if a main transformer blows it takes 2 years to make a new one, there are only about 25 in the world. dont forget water is pumped by electricity, no clean water and you are back to victorian times and diseases!

the way the power cut was hanndled by the service providers is a joke.
JT was down and there was not JT service in the north of the island, My phone connected to France.
Newtel broadband is still down.
Airtel is up but slow.
If you can’t make calls during a powercut, this is really concerning…
I thought this was a first world island, 1st world island third world service!

The last thing we want is another cable running here. That will enable them to put up prices again
to justify it. 3rd world Jersey strikes again!!

#1… If we have to get scientific, power cuts happen normally at night because of the surge in demand for electricity! – thus causing a crash in the power station
The power cut itself isn’t worth the news, the disturbance it has caused to hustings and damage to stores or anywhere that is dependent on freezers might be worth noting though!

This was a very minor incident !
Met a couple on holiday who live in a middle class area in the USA, where all power cables are overhead, and fall down a lot. They actually had their own back up generator, as it was not unknown to have power cuts of 4 days!
They thought our supply system from France with local back up was very sophisticated !
Well done JEC in providing such a reliable supply !

No 1, absolutely fab post.
I see the moaning brigade are though, who gives a monkeys if your broadband or mobile phone didn’t work or any piece of electrical equipment that relies on JEC to run it, embrace the silence and do something we all had to do a few years ago, talk to some one face to face!
But there will be a load more moaners on here soon!

Don’t worry lads, in the event of a serious power or Internet cut to the island, hundreds of aged ledger scratchers can be drafted in to take over from the computers, coupled with the trusty pigeon post and pony express in association with Condor’s ferries and Jersey Airport’s 100% reliable service they will keep the FINANCE INDUSTRY in the game!

My own thoughts are that the magnetic storm we experienced is to blame. There were warnings for a couple of days that things might get messy. Shouldn’t really have come as any surprise to the power producers and Jersey Electricity, why its taking so long to give an official explanation as to the cause of the outage is mind boggling! I know a person who calls the JEC to warn them of these events but they never take any notice. Had this power outage happened during the usual finance working hours, large monetary losses may have been encountered. Maybe its time the JEC took these warnings seriously.

I should have stated where my evidence comes from for my view as to what caused the power outage from France. Follow this link and see for yourselves. Each bar is 3 hours. Time is utc so add an hour for bst. Cheers for now
