The new Lieutenant-Governor, General Sir John McColl, (left) and the Bailiff, Michael Birt, at today's States sitting

, praised the States this morning for its direct approach in tackling challenges like the economic downturn.

Giving his first speech to the Chamber following his swearing-in yesterday, Sir John spoke of the many challenges facing the world today and said from what he had seen Jersey was in a strong position going forward.

He also had praise for the Island’s honorary and voluntary sectors and repeated comments made in the past that Jersey is a good example of ‘the Big Society’ in action.

    So they handled the situation…..
When the credit crunch hit they still rolled ahead with the zero ten policy knowing full well it would lose money….it is now estimated at least £80 million is lost due to zero ten. To get this back they introduced gst and 20 means 20 and the public paid right in the middle of one of the biggest recessions in history.

They pumped £40 million into the construction industry with a further 30 or so million planned for next year and still the money disappeared aboard.

They are still faced with a shortfall

This is not handling it and we all know they are further rocky times ahead….the only difference this time Is that the public have already being stretched to the limit.

Welcome to Jersey Sir John, but beware ‘The Jersey way’.

The cynics above are right to be cynical, you appear to be reading from the same visitors rose tinted brief as given to Mr Kawczynski. You may wish to read:

That what happens when you have experienced the real world and seen real poverty and depravation? One must wonder what he thinks about the very sad souls who think that Jersey is on a par with North Korea and that Syvret really is the white Mandela.

Good speech by the outgoing Lt Gov, positively scathing of the states. I bet there were a few red faces at that sitting.

Hopefully when he makes his next speech to the Chamber (when he leaves in 5 years time), he will say what he really thinks.

‘Hopefully when he makes his next speech to the Chamber (when he leaves in 5 years time), he will say what he really thinks.’

He will probably also know from personal experience what to say, rather than relying on advice to praise the ‘Big Society’(whatever that is – probably not the one I am lucky enough to be a member of) and the honorary system.

Sir John is right on the money. It was handled very very well. For those who don’t think so, go spend some time in the US, UK or Greece.

I like Mr Impartial who says “I disagree” without offering a reason. Just because you say something doesn’t make it truth. The facts are as they are: no borrowing, relatively low unemployment.

The decision to continue with zero-ten ensured we retained a competitive edge in the finance industry, and therefore jobs.

Get a life you moaners – next boat and all. If you can’t afford it, I will buy you lot a one-way ticket as long as you never return.
