After taking the oath, Jersey's new Lieutenant-Governor, General Sir John McColl (left) with the Bailiff, Michael Birt, in the Royal Court
JERSEY’S new Lieutenant Governor yesterday pledged to do all that he could to promote and protect the Island and its people for the next five years.
Sworn in by the the Royal Court, General Sir John McColl was then greeted by a Royal Square square full of people, a trumpet fanfare and a guard of honour as he made his first public appearance in the role.
In a busy two days for the 59-year-old and his family, His Excellency, as he is now entitled to be known, then attended a church service in his honour.
And today he made the first of only two speeches he will ever make to the States – the other one being on his retirement – before attending a dinner with Members last night.

Sir
One offers a warm welcome to Sir John.
If he wishes to protect Jersey, its people and their way of life, might one humbly suggest he start by addressing the problem of the island’s ‘enemy within’ and jail those lawless renegades currently running for public office, preferably before October 19.
