JERSEY is to have its first residential alcohol and drug detox centre. It is due to open early next year in New Street.

This five-bed unit, which will be for public and private patients, is being set up by the Weston Healthcare Foundation, which comes under the umbrella of the Silkworth Charity Group.

A £100,000 grant from the Lloyds TSB Foundation, which was given over two years, is making it possible to convert a building in New Street into the detox centre.

The group’s chief executive, Jason Wyse, said that there was currently no facility in the Island which exclusively provided a detox service.

Wouldn’t it be better to centralise all these types of centres in one location away from the stress and temptations of town? Eg.St Aubins high street?

If the centre is to be in New Street, why is the backdrop of this picture on Vauxhall Street?
