Work continues on the park before Saturday’s official opening

A NEARLY finished multi-million-pound Millennium Town Park is due to open on Saturday morning.

The official opening of the long-awaited park will begin at 10 am with the unveiling of some of the area’s key features. But Transport and Technical Services admit that there will still be some work left to do to complete the project.

On Saturday visitors will be able to see the switching on of the park’s water curtain, two specially commissioned pieces of art and the children’s play area, as well as being able to view the park’s sports court.

First called for by the public after a petition was gathered by the Millennium Town Park Group in 1997, the project has been a lengthy and complicated process. But with the end in sight, TTS are keen to see as many Islanders as possible at the opening.

I’d love to come to the opening ceremony but there’s nowhere to park. Get there early cos by Saturday night the glass sculpture will have been smashed, they’ll be vomit all over the benches and the water feature will contain an interesting green additive.

    @Mark,

They had like 14 years to plan it and find a contractor.
They probably turn around and say that all the local contractors were busy and couldn’t do it.

Its great that there is a new park available for us all to enjoy, and its predictable the usual naysayers are on here running it down.

Don’t be under the impression that no local suppliers have been used, if you look closely, every local company with the ability to deliver quickly has been used.

If you look even more closely, its more than just a park. It recycles rain water to keep the plants alive, it has a water filtration system to keep the water clean in the play areas, it’s even got wifi access. It’s given people living in this island work.

So, go for a walk in the park, then make comments back here.

And no, I dont work for the contrator. I’m just a mum, looking forward to taking my kids somewhere nice for the afternoon…..

The metal gate thing (is it the water wall?) looks suspiciously like the entrance to a car park, careful no one drives into the park in confusion.

And the wishy washy Chinese granite looks nothing like our local rose coloured granite, though it would look fine in China I am sure.

Oh well I’m sure the Carlsberg crew will like it though :)

Yes it must be a godsend for you having a park top take the kids to, I don’t know how you managed all these years without it. It’s a 15 minute walk from bath St to the beach or Howard Davis Park and no one could expect you to undertake suich a herculean journey with 2 kids. Of cours taxpayers like me who don’t have kids but pay for yours have paid for this carbuncle as well as lost valuable parking spaces. Still your kids are safe from burning excess calories trekking to fields afar for their enjoyment and that’s what really matters

The metal gate thing is a car wash. Though the Carlsberg crew will be showering in it in no time… no public toilets, but we have public showers!

Mum of two in a park,

You made valid, positive comments and showed that you are looking forward to something that enhances and improves town.

Why does everyone else jump on a bandwagon overladen with vitriol? Yes, the Council of Ministers make Kermit and the other Muppets look like professionals.

But leave ordinary people alone to find some light and the few positives out there. Its miserable enough with the ruling elite crushing spirits, lets not turn on each other.

#12 Uncalled for comments. I signed the petition for the park when my children were aged 3 & 1. Shame they are too old to play in it now as is the case for a lot of others.

#8 Enjoy your time with your children in the park (wherever it may be). We spent many happy hours in the parks around the island.

    Common Sense

    Tim & SH
OK lets put it another way, lets vote how many of us would agree to spending £10 million on this park when the island is skint ( and don’t get me started on how digging up some tarmac can possibly cost £10 Mill )

Given a choice what would it, be playground for kids and drunks versus money spent on hospital, nurses and essential services.

So the choice is kids walk for 15 mins to play or sick, vulnerable, elderly get the treatment they spent their whole working life paying for.

    Answers please.
