THE States need to continue to invest in urban regeneration to breathe new life into town, said St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft after the opening of the Millennium Town Park on Saturday morning.

The park, 14 years in the making, was finally opened this weekend in front of a delighted crowd of around 300 Islanders.

And Mr Crowcroft says that by investing in the north of St Helier the States could not only improve the area for residents, but could also drive forward more investment from businesses in that part of town.

He said: ‘The public investment in this important open space will be the catalyst for the regeneration of the entire area.’

opened in front of 300 people WOW that’s an amazing turn out for the amount of money spent.
Do you know where the park is built? next to a well known drug dealing area of town and how long till the drunks are sleeping there?
Remember you read it here 1st

    Get real Jersey!!

haha what complete tosh Mr Crowcroft…. its the lack of parking in a adjacent position to the main shopping centre is what would “breath new life into the town”….
Whilst the park is going to be great for families ( & drunk teenagers) the lack of accessable parking in St Helier is the downfall of Jersey…

I went there today to have a look.

My thoughts?? Meh. Just looks like they rolled out a load of Astroturf on a car park. I for one will not be going there for socialising/family picnics etc.

Not worth the money. Best way to regenerate town would be to have more people in town shopping socialising etc. Best way to do that? well a car park would be a start. I vote we get rid of the park and replace it with a car park!

Sick of hearing these inane none statements.Le Mausuriers wanted to invest in the area, but planning permission was rejected, because of the Odean,Which in my humble opinion if planning permission were to be asked for it now, would be laughed at.Tnanks a lot Freddy “Iconic” Cohen.

Perhaps if Constable Crowcroft is so interested in the welfare of the people of St Helier, then he should look at the empty site at the corner of Hilgrove Street and Halkett Street together with the two derelict and worn out properties that have no historic interest and furthermore could not be legaly occupied despite any restoration. I do recall him saying some time back that the demolition of these properties would be “over his dead body”.I hope it keeps fine for him waiting for Lily Langtree and Charles Dickens to return to Jersey. All my company wants is to improve this part of town for the sake of the other business people in the area. Any accusations of greed and money making are false as with the erosion of time and money, through battles with the planners and the heretage people, the development of this site has become totally unviable.

It could boost investment if the planning department had the courage to demolish the cinema which is facing the wrong way for any architectural merit to be enjoyed.

    Have some courage

The big block to regenerating the area is the listed dump of a building the odean building.
Let them knock this down and we would have millions spent on the area within months.
The states can’t see that if you want people to invest you need to cut some of the red tape like listing old ugly buildings that have no use!

Great, so where do we park our cars to visit this new park and all the businesses that will obviously be generated?

Look at the park at le frigate. One ridiculously overpriced cafe and some trampolines (not sure if they are even there anymore)

    Recession over. well done lads.

3oo people attended, what another fantastic £11,000,000 investment by the States. Spark town regeneration? Only if they had built several floors of parking beneath it. What one vote can do, even in error.

I am sick and tired of people asking for more parking in town.

I am in London commuting and everyone here walks a lot more than our lazy moaners above.

We could build a multi story in St Brelades bay there is no debating that would increase trade for all the beach concessions.

St Aubins is short of parking too and Gorey Harbour desperately needs more spaces.

The people who live in town get together and push for more parking near our popular out of town destinations.

No those who live in the country are selfishly protecting where they live and stopping those of us who live in the country enjoying the country beauty.

Do some walking and less moaning buy your shopping online I don’t care town does not need you we already have 30% of the population.

Unbelievable that the powers that be think this will regenerate the area with thriving businesses ! I see little commercial activity arouind the other parks in this island due to a lack of nearby parking !!!!

The only business that has set up in the area in the past few years is the Indego House Doctors Surgery – a modern, purpose built facility which had the benefit of paid public parking nearby ! My guess is that the partners behind this venture are none too pleased !

Agree totally with John Manley. How rediculous to insist on keeping those two eyesores along with the eyesores behind the Co-Op in Charing Cross and the frontage of the old burnt down church in Wesley Street. Let’s start afresh with some proper new attractive buildings that are suitable for modern times. It is possible.
