Big supermarkets restricted to one Sunday opening

Supermarkets will be able to open on one Sunday in the run up to christmas
SUPERMARKETS in Jersey will only be allowed to open on one Sunday in the run up to Christmas Day, the Island’s Constables have ruled.
Large supermarkets have been left out of a new blanket Sunday trading permit for the four Sundays in the festive season and will only be permitted to open on 18 December – the last Sunday before Christmas Day.
While supermarket representatives feel that opening their stores seven days a week during the Christmas season would be welcomed by Jersey residents, the Constables are concerned for the effect this may have on their parishioners.
St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft said: ‘The Constables are worried about the effect of a big shop opening on a Sunday will have on an area.’

‘The Constables are worried about the effect of a big shop opening on a Sunday will have on an area.’
WTF? I’m worried about the effect the Constables are having on my area.

this is ridiculous, all shops should be entitled to open 7 days a week,

I would love to know what the reasons for the worry about the effect of large supermarkets being open are. Doesnt seem to matter for the remaining six days of the week so why should Sunday be any different.
Couldit possibly be an old fashioned notion that Sunday used to be a day of rest. If so, wake up and realise it isn’t anymore

In these hard times many people have to work 6 days a week to make ends meet, large shops being open on a Sunday would be a godsend to many! Constables need to get out there and speak to the ordinary person and see what they need not guess what they want! Shop staff who work a Sunday will get a day off in the week normally so that explodes the next myth of exploited workers!

Strange the Constables are worried about the effects of shoppers when they don’t give a monkeys about the effects of the motor rally
Report abuse
what effect are they worried about? surely opening for only one day would cause more chaos with everyone rushing to get last minute groceries than to open longer?
Constables, not too sure where your priorities lie here – do one of you live near one of these supermarkets and are afraid your sundays will be absolutely ruined by a little traffic noise?

I’m a member of the public and I say keep Sunday special. 6 days is more than enough to do you’re shopping in.

What age are we living in?
This situation is crazy, just why are the constables preventing us for going about our daily lives?
I want to be able to shop on a Sunday if I wish and that includes large supermarkets.
I am all for them opening in the run up to Christmas, and for that matter all year round would be good. Bring B&Q Sunday opening as well, lost count number of times I needed something from there on a Sunday, only to think no, it’s Sunday, can’t do.

Its about time you organised yourself properly. If you can’t shop Monday to Saturday what makes you think you’ll manage it on Sunday?

Some people may actually have to work 6 days a week.

We are in the dark ages in Jersey. I work 6-7 days per week as do lots of people now.
Sunday is my only day off sometimes and I don’t see why I should be penalised and have to pay “Express” prices because of a Constables view from his Ivory tower.
I suppose he gets his retired wife to do all his shopping in the week, if only we all had that luxury.
Shop in the evening I hear you cry!!
Really? I work 8 until 8, so am lucky if I can make it. Lunchtime? Whats that? The 15 minutes I have to wolf down a sandwhich.
The Constables need to get into 2011 instead of sleepy 1955 in their dreamland.
I actually cant believe that someone bought up the Jersey Rally here!!
Got to go, on my break and the boss is looking at his watch!!

I live in Paris and I look at http://www.thisisjersey.com every day. Why ? Because I love your island ! And you know what ? Crisis is everywhere and politicians seem to be the same. People need to have a job, need to work. So if people are ok for working on sunday, why is it cancelled ? We have the same problem in France.

So the Constables have spoken so that is that, a shame really because a lot of people do like to shop on a Sunday. Still look on the bright side it means there will be more short date bargains on a Saturday at our newest chain of supermarkets.
Carry on living in the dark ages, it’s what people want in Jersey, it’s what makes us quirky and different or is it?

9 Tracy.
How will you shop on a Sunday if you have to work that day?
I imagine that you are in a job not yet thought to be a Sunday working candidate.
How would you feel about working Sunday and having another day off in the week?
