INTERNET trading companies based in Jersey have sparked hundreds of complaints to Trading Standards.

Website pricing errors and confusing terms and conditions are two of the issues which led to a sharp rise in calls made to Trading Standards last year.

The body, which looks after consumers’ rights, received almost 2,500 calls from angry customers in 2010, 650 more than the previous year.

It is the highest number of complaints taken since 2005.

Trevor Le Roux, director of Trading Standards, said that they can sometimes receive up to 300 complaints about just one issue.

Low prices equal low overheads and less service. If customers want better service, they can go down the road to a shop and pay a premium.

In recent years I have often bought from internet companies based in Jersey. The goods have arrived very quickly and I have been very happy with them.

With the amount of turnover I would anticipate some problems at times but I have not experienced that myself.

I also buy from Amazon with excellent results and value. Many of their goods are cheaper than the same ones on eBay.

I also use eBay at times and have bought used items from the UK and occasionally from elsewhere including the USA. I have also bought new items from Hong Kong and mainland China through eBay and again had excellent results, especially when buying items that are not normally available in this part of the world.

I would have expected many more problems than I have actually had so my experience of internet buying has been good.

    Tendentious Article

The two main Jersey based internet companies have shipped circa 30 MILLION products in 2010 between them…

2’500 calls on 30M unit sales- some giant corporations would pray to have their complaints so low.

    By the way…

Statistics from 2010 posted on the 30th of December 2011- Wonder what was the intention of this article ???

Your answer is …….it is a slow news week and the Jersey mafia are trying to stir up anti Internet sentiment in anticipation of Jersey challenging the UK government to protect the future of the fulfillment industry. Am I close ????

Why would they stir up negativity surrounding the fulfilment industry if they are trying to argue positively towards it. surely they would be saying how great all these companies were doing and try to hide all the complaints.

Sorry Tendentious, an insider told me it was 80 million, not your 30 million. That is not the point, we still expect good service and yes the service is and price is still better than a trip into town.

Sorry Seller @1, you will just have to up your game.

    Buyer

I don’t want better service locally, I just want service. Some service. Any service. Coupled with not being ripped off. Not too much too ask, surely?

Well said Buyer – in any case whoever said you’re more likely to get a better level of service on the High Street? What about the disabled shopper who wrote in to the JEP yesterday saying they were barely able to move in one shop due to all the clutter and that half of all the others were shut? The internet never sleeps!
