The search is on for second men’s refuge in town

THE men’s refuge in St Aubin is so busy that the trustees are trying to find a second property in town to cope with the demand.
Sanctuary House has already been forced to rent rooms in six bed and breakfasts to provide accommodation for all the men in its care.
The vice chairman of the board of trustees, Deputy Sean Power, said that he was now looking for a permanent building in St Helier to help ease the burden.
Sanctuary House, which opened as the Island’s first refuge for men in May, has been very busy this Christmas and is currently catering for up to 25 men aged between 18 and 73.
‘It’s a very stressful time of the year,’ Deputy Power said.

I wonder if St Helier will show the same nimbism as the residents of the High St in St Aubin did ?

I know one property which would be ideal … Roseneath. What would it tell us about our island if one homeless charity being run by States Members was to move into the premises just vacated by another homeless charity, also being run by States Members, which had to close because fellow States Members wouldn’t fund it.

Hopefully this time there won’t be all the bigotry about “attracting antisocial behaviour” to the area – of course all the smug homeowners in St. Aubin didn’t think neglecting the homeless is an antisocial act.
Best of luck in finding a venue if there is anything ordinary Jersey folk can do to help, please post here.

Please don’t tar us all the with same brush. As a St Aubins resident and all of 30 seconds walk from the refuge I was ‘for the refuge’ not against it. When voting time came around I enquired about the candidates thoughts of the refuge and those who were against it were not getting my vote. I do hope they find a secondary venue to cope with the demand.
