POSTAL regulations have been relaxed to help the threatened fulfilment industry to compete in new markets in Europe.

The CI Competition Regulatory Authorities have made an initial decision to grant postal licences to Hi-Speed Freight Services Ltd and TNT Post (UK) Ltd to handle packets and large letters going from Jersey to continental Europe and Ireland.

However, they would be excluded from handling post between Jersey and the UK, the Isle of Man and the Chanel Islands.

Explaining its decision, which was based on a review of Jersey’s postal market, JCRA executive director John Curran said: ‘The evidence suggests that there is demand for better postal links to the European market.

‘The proposal to license these two operators will help to improve the service to these markets and may help the bulk mail sector to remain competitive and remain based in Jersey.’

Is this Post or pure logistics? If this the first step in competing in the market on the grounds of pure competition rather than sales tax evasion this is a very positive move. Kevin Keen is action? I hope so.

Sorry, no sympathy for Jersey Post – ripoff prices, unhelpful staff and 14 days to send a parcel to the UK sign for – bring on the new comers

In another statement, (purely fictional you understand) , the JCRA said “ following a review of publicly owned companies which used to plough their profits back into the Jersey tax coffers, we decided to allow outside competition to cherry pick the most profitable sectors of their business and allow market forces to dictate future staff levels therein. Although these companies are non local and therefore pay no tax in the island we still feel that a benefit has been given to the consumer. Local food prices will continue to remain high, as will petrol. We did consider action against the private companies who own the bulk of food and petrol outlets but wee’d ourselves slightly when we called them – so we hung up the phone”

Seems like they’re determined to undermine Jersey Post by inviting foreign non tax-paying businesses into Jersey.
We all lose in the long term.
