Bid for States U-turn over car park left turn

Green Street roundabout where cars have to turn left when exiting Snow Hill car park

WITH unemployment at record levels, cuts biting into public services and thousands of Islanders going without a pay rise, Jersey’s politicians have some major issues to deal with.

Those issues are to be shortly put to one side so that the States Members can get to grips with the thorny issue of whether or not to overturn the rule forcing drivers leaving Snow Hill car park to turn left up Green Street.

In his first proposition since returning to the States last October, St Clement Deputy Gerard Baudains will ask the Island’s parliament to change the rules for the car park exit.

A sign painted on the road at the exit of the car park – where, coincidentally, States Members have their free spaces on States days – reminds leaving drivers that they must take the first available left turn into Green Street.

Surely not a note of sarcasm? Absolutely – proves that States Members are soooooo far removed from reality that this is their top priority. Like commissioning sculptures while historic buildings crumble…

Hmm, if there has ever been an unclear road marking then this is it. If you are implying that it should mean turn left into green street. Interpretation of those signs, the one written on the road and the actual sign, both indicate that at the end of the road, you must turn left – Well it’s a roundabout durr. So you make the left turn onto the roundabout, having thus satisfied the condition laid out by the sign.
About time these road planners stopped smoking the funny stuff me thinks.

A road sign needs to be BIG, CLEAR and SIMPLE. (see below)

Agreed, the fact that upon exiting the car park, you are joining the rounderbout, and thus turning left would, in law mean that you have complied with the sign.

If it was intended that traffic leaving the car park proceeded along Green Street, a separate exit road from the car park, that does not touch teh rounderbout in any way would be required.

And this is being discussed in The House !!!

Did anyone realise that was what the sign meant? Most drivers just continued ahead quite safely.

Yes Nigel, road signage in Jersey is cr**.

A road sign needs to be BIG, CLEAR and SIMPLE. Many seem to forget that most drivers are reading the road whilst driving and do not have the time to stop and interpret the signs.

That said, most would like Gerard to focus on the economy first.

asking them to pay for their spaces would have been a better use of your time Gerard.

Most drivers ignore the sign, with the result that one day one of the near misses involving traffic coming out of the tunnel will be a serious accident.

It says “turn left”. What part of that don’t people understand?

I don’t agree with Baudains’ proposition but I nonetheless think that this is a very unbalanced and petty piece of journalism.

    Self-centred

This is a self-centred proposition – he lives on the wrong side of the roundabout, but wants free parking – if it is that much of an inconvenience, he could pay to park in Green Street, take the bus or cycle. I wish our politicians could focus on the main difficulties the island is suffering, not try to use their “elected power” to their own means, be it parking issues or politically blocking planning matters that then cost the island large legal fees.

Nigel – Did anyone realise that was what the sign meant? Most drivers just continued ahead quite safely.

I certainly didn’t realise that I had to turn into green Street, I wait until it’s safe to exit and take the 2nd turn heading for Longueville Road. I don’t see how it’s any different from any other roundabout exit. Give way to traffic oncoming from the right and exit when safe to do so.

Deputy Baudins stop scraping, you are at the bottom of the barrel.

The States need to get their priorities right – they should have a debate to decide on how many steam clocks we need in the new town park!

When will TTS sort out the variety of signage along Green Street which moves around in the wind and confuses everyone.

It is pretty obvious what this sign means to anyone who has studied the highway code.

    Losing the will

Mack, Nigel, Roadhog…..all accidents waiting to happen.

I’m not sure which is worse – people who are too ignorant to understand a simple road sign (look at the photo – it’s an arrow pointing left!) or too reckless to bother following it. Either way you shouldn’t be allowed on the roads.

Unfortunately, you could put 20 signs there and some imbeciles will still drive straight ahead or around the roundabout.

If they want to make it safer they could make it one-way so that traffic can only enter from the roundabout and has to exit at Snow Hill. Just get rid of the taxi rank that nobody uses and create more badly needed spaces in the car park.

Yes ignorance is dangerous and these sorts should be taken off the roads. They are a menace to other road users.

I would say this is a good obvious safety measure however this isn’t the way of the states, they prefer to make a pig’s ear then spend loads trying to put it right.

    12 Losing (lost?) the will.
The sign indicates only that you mustn’t turn right when coming out of Snow Hill car park, not that you must drive down Green Street.
Your idea of exiting only at Snow Hill would cause a lot of conjestion.

No, the sign tells you to turn left. If you can’t see that then you need to retake your driving test.

Nope, you really need to learn the Highway Code.

The sign means turn left ahead.

The sign for no right turn is a black arrow pointing right with a red diagonal line through it on a white background and a red circle around the outside.

I know it would cause additional congestion on Hill St but that’s better than a serious accident that’s currently waiting to happen with chancers playing russian roulette trying to cut if front of traffic to illegally get onto the roundabout.

Please tell me you don’t drive! The sign shows you must turn left – an arrow pointing right with a red diagonal line through it would mean you are not allowed to turn right!

      • nigel

I am well aware that sign 612 means that you must not turn right, but the use of sign 609 is ambiguous in this situation as you have to bear left into the traffic flow.

      Easy answer.

For those without much common sense, TTS could just put a new sign there. The sign would say “turn left onto green street only”.

Problem solved, people with low iq can get the hang of it and no-one can then pretend that they don’t understand what the sign means.
