ISLANDERS are being warned not to touch debris left in Cheapside following a major fire at a car workshop.

Firefighters were called out on Friday evening after a blaze broke out in the valeting area of the Jersey Hyundai shop. Two crews were initially sent to the scene and the area was cordoned off following concerns that the fire could spread.

Despite suffering extensive damage to the rear of the premises, the business was open the following morning – and even sold two cars.

Nigel Harrington, who co-owns the business, said: ‘The valeting bay and an office above were destroyed and we have lost about 20 per cent of the roof. We also lost a car that was in the valeting area. However, the rest of the shop has been untouched and we are very much open for business and ready to do deals.’
