Police dog Thor searching derelict properties in the area on Tuesday, shortly before he discovered the missing woman

A WOMAN who disappeared almost seven weeks ago has been found alive – less than 200 yards from her home.

Margarida Nascimento De Ascensao, who disappeared on 16 December, was found in a derelict building close to St Saviour’s Road by a States police dog handler shortly after 9.30 am yesterday.

She was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital, where her condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

Her sister and a police family liaison officer were yesterday at her bedside.
The discovery brings to an end one of the longest missing-person inquires carried out by the States police in recent years.

This is an excellent result for the States of Jersey Police Dog Section. I am very glad that this lady has been found safe and well. All too often when people have been missing for so long there is a sad ending and it is nice to hear some good news for a change.

Wonderful news that the lady’s been found. I wonder though – the JEP says it’s the longest investigation in Police History – when did they have the idea to start using dogs? Surely it didn’t take them 7 weeks to trace the woman’s scent?

Still, all’s well that ends well. My abysmal opinion of the Police has been raised a few notches.

It is indeed great news that the lady has been found. What is unfortunate is that the police searched that derelict property a number of weeks ago when the lady was hiding under a piece of carpet. They didn’t have a dog on that occasion as this section of the police resources has been depleted to the bare minimum in favour of motor bikes and exceedingly expensive leathers for the Chief and senior staff who ride these machines in the interests of PR. This was an exceedingly close call…..thank goodness one inspector decided to revisit derelict addresses already searched otherwise this might not have been such a happy ending.

Surely the first thing you would do is search neighbouring properties…

    Not rocket science!
