A RECORD number of trainees on a scheme to help school-leavers find work were offered jobs in the first three months of 2012.

A total of 48 young people on the Advance to Work scheme took up paid jobs between January and March this year, compared to 31 over the same period in 2011.

Sophie Le Sueur, Advance to Work project manager, said that it was heartening to see a rise in the number of trainees entering the workforce despite the current economic climate.

She added that although only 11 of those roles were permanent, those who had taken up seasonal positions would still benefit from the experience.

“only 11 of those roles were permanent”

What a total waste of time and money for everyone. I bet employers look at the CV’s of people, see they are on this scheme and give them a wide berth…

“I bet”? So you don’t know for sure.

      How about some facts:

Trends show that people with recent work experience are far more successful at finding new work if they are made redundant or their short term contract comes to an end compared to those that have never worked or have been out of work for a long period.

Have you ever been out of work and know the soul destroying feeling of rejection from the constant applying for jobs in this current enconomic climate. Advance to work gives these young people hope and the confidence to go out again and apply for further jobs with the hope that one day they will be fortunate.

Typical narrow minded post, these people benefit from this system because they get the opportunity to gain valuable workplace experience and they obtain some useful qualifications, which enables them to stand out better at the interview stages of applying for jobs.

I want you to explain why employers would give them a wide berth Bean…

What would put them off? Would it be the work-related training and accredited qualifications they have obtained through the scheme such as Emergency Aid, Customer Service, Passport to Safety plus more trade-specific courses such as Welcome Jersey OR would it be the 3 month, unpaid work placement the young people have committed to?

Advance To Work have got over 300 people young people in to paid work, that’s a weekly saving of £27,000 in Jobseekers Allowance (approx £90 a week), on top of that, we have the social security and tax these young people are now paying. Far more than the cost of running the scheme.

As for a ‘waste of time’? I don’t think the 300 young people (some of which are now supporting themselves and their families) in paid work or the ATW staff whose diligent work is changing lives for the better would agree.

Now is the time when seasonal jobs are created and people are taken on so surely it is encouraging to see Jersey’s young people snapping up these positions. Plus the benefits of these seasonal positions are as follows a) they gain work-related experience becoming more confident, skilled members of society b) there’s potential for a FT job c) they’re not claiming Income Support.

Please do your research before you post your pessimistic drivel.

Brilliant scheme! I did Advance Plus as a 24yr old graduate and secured full time work in a job I enjoy and am interested in, after a year of unemployment.

Working..There is a scheme suitable for everyone so either the other 3,000 unemployed are lazy or unwilling. They should make everyone receiving benefits do some kind of work exp/community service.

Not a wasrte of time at all. Advance to work is a brilliant scheme helping young people find work. If advance to work was not around there would be alot of young people out of work therefore not gaining any experience, making it harder to find a job in the long term. Weather its permanent or temporary Advance to work is imporoving chances of Employment through Jersey. A great scheme for young people, parents and also employers.
