THE Princess Royal saw the first baby gorilla to be born at Jersey’s wildlife park in nearly a decade during her visit to the Island yesterday to mark her 40 years as patron of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust.

Princess Anne peered through the glass of the indoor gorilla enclosure to see Indigo, who is almost two months old, cradled in his mother Hlala Kahilli’s arms.

She also got to see the baby’s father, Badongo, and Kishka, one of the other females the dominant silverback is currently mating with.

After the visit to Durrell, Princess Anne was escorted to the Animals’ Shelter in St Saviour’s Road to officially open its new building.
