WILDLY inaccurate reporting about torture and murder at Haut de la Garenne has been used by Lord Justice Leveson as evidence of how national journalists ‘throw away the rule book’ to sell papers.

After hearing months of evidence, Sir Brian published his long-awaited report about the culture and ethics of the press on Thursday and made a series of recommendations.

One of those who appeared before the inquiry was freelance journalist Nick Davies, whose book Flat Earth News argues that the commercial pressure to tell the story which sells more papers leads to a warping of the truth.

Mr Davies drew the inquiry’s attention to the reporting of alleged child abuse at the former Jersey children’s home and said that it followed a similar pattern to that in stories about the disappearance of Madeline McCann and the murder of Bristol landscape architect Joanne Yates, which pointed the finger at the entirely innocent Christopher Jeffries.
