A CONSTRUCTION firm has been fined £20,000 after a builder fell off a ladder and seriously injured his back while working on a roof at Beaulieu School.

The 62-year-old was trying to find the source of a leak during a building project at the school when his ladder, which was positioned on a sloping roof, slipped.

He fell 11 ft onto the pitched roof and suffered a fracture to a disc in his back which later required specialist treatment in the UK.

The Royal Court heard on Friday that the man is still in pain – nearly 12 months after the accident – and that he has been unable to return to work.
